Knights Trample Butte
BOTH MEN & WOMEN WIN GVC TITLES!

(11/2/01-Shasta College)
The Shasta College men's cross country team ran over the competition on Friday in the league meet held at Shasta College. Both the men's and women's races played out as advertised, the Shasta men would have a tight race and the Shasta women would prevail if all of their runners would cross the finish line. The men's title would come down to which team would have the best day. That "best day" turned out to be for the Knights. Lead by Dan Sweet (1st 22:19), Michael Leake (2nd 22:50) and Jesse Minor (5th 23:27) the Knight men would take three of the top five places. Sweet, Leake, Minor and Carson Blume (7th place 25:17) would all earn all-conference honors. Final score had the Knight's men holding a 23-34 point lead over the second place Butte College men. The Knights have now won the league title for six straight years. In the women's race the Lady Knights were the only GVC school to field a full team. To win the GVC title, all the Lady Knights had to do was have all of their runners finish the race. The key to their title was Lauren Wild, who was not feeling well. If she could hang on and finish the race the Lady Knights would qualify for the title. As it turned out, Lauren ran a strong race and the Lady Knights would not be denied. Naomi Ramos won the women's race in 21:40, she beat the second place Siskiyous runner by over one minute. Naomi and Meagan Wilcox (7th place 25:44) were both named to the All-GVC team. The Lady Knights have taken the league title for four straight years.
