450 RUNNERS TO STATE
On a cool fall day in Fresno, the Shasta College Cross Country team competed at the Community College State Cross Country Championships. This meet is the biggest in the state both in size and importance. Over 450 runners competed on both the men’s and women’s side in order to determine the top community College teams in the state. “This is a great meet,” said Coach Aaron Junta. “Unlike at the high school level, which has five divisions, we have only one race for all the Community Colleges in the state. Overall team winners were Orange Coast College in the women’s and San Bernardino College on the men’s side. Shasta College's Maggie Roberts had a great race grace. Maggie finished 47 th with a time of 20:20. This topped off a fantastic season for the Enterprise High School Graduate who had only been running endurance races for three months. Other Shasta finishers were Ashley Britton finished 78th with a time of 21:45, Danielle Morarity who finished 120th in a time of 22:20, and Tyler Bowman who finished 163rd in a time of 23:39.

FIVE KNIGHTS QUALIFY FOR STATE!
On November 3rd, the Shasta College Cross Country competed at the Northern California Community College Cross Country Championships in Folsom. The women’s team finished 14th in the race, which was four spots off qualifying for the State Championships. Although, they did not qualify for state as a team, the Lady Knights did qualify three individuals to the state meet. Maggie Roberts led the Knights by finishing 11th with a time of 20:00. When asked about her race, Maggie stated, “I tried to start out conservative in the first mile. My goal was to pass the other girls as the race wore on.” Other state meet qualifiers were Ashley Britton who finished 41 st in a time of 21:31 and Danielle Morarity who finished 52nd in a time of 22:01. Said Coach Junta about the women’s performance, “It would have been great for the whole team to qualify. However, it’s nice to get some individuals out to Fresno. Hopefully this is something that we can build on for next year.” The men’s team also had some outstanding performances as well. Abdow Haji placed 10th for the Knights in a time of 21:14. This time was fast enough to qualify him for the state championships. Tyler Bowman also qualified for State as well. Tyler, a Foothill High School grad, placed 48th in a time of 22:53.

2007 GVC CHAMPIONSHIPS

On October 25th, the Shasta College Cross Country competed at the Golden Valley League Championships at the Forebay Aquatics Center in Oroville. On the Women’s side, the Knights finished 2nd to Yuba College. The Knights were led by Maggie Roberts who was the conference runner up with a 5K time of 20:27. Maggie, a former Enterprise High School athlete, was a big surprise for the Knights this year. A hurdler, basketball and volleyball player in high school, Maggie had never competed in a cross country race before this year. Said Coach Aaron Junta, “To come into your first year of cross country and to be 10 seconds away from a league title is amazing. She has not even scratched the surface of her potential.” On October 25th, the Shasta College Cross Country competed at the Golden Valley League Championships at the Forebay Aquatics Center in Oroville. ) Abdow Haji came to Shasta College all the way from El Toro High School in Orange County to become the backbone of Aaron Junta's first cross country team.Haji backed up the hype for now by winning the men's 4-mile race at the Shasta College Invitational cross country meet at West Valley High School on Saturday. The event drew three teams because it fell the same weekend as a more prestigious race in Fresno. The men's race turned into a duel between Shasta and rival Butte. While the deeper Roadrunners won in the team standings, Haji held off top Butte runner Ryan Martz in 22 minutes, 48.30 seconds. Martz crossed the finish line in 22:58.58. "It was my first time racing the course," Haji said. "It was a pretty hard course, some steep hills. But I tried to run my pace. I looked back once and the other guy was almost next to me, so I picked it up near the end." Haji and Martz finished more than 90 seconds ahead of the rest of the pack. Wesley Newman was the next best Knights finisher in fifth place in 24:46.60, followed by Tyler Bowman in sixth in 24:54.40. In the women's 3-mile race, injuries pared the Knights down to their top three runners. Trudy Mohr, an unattached runner, won the race in 21:02.78, followed by Sierra's Brittany Cino in 22:00.05. The next three finishers were Shasta runners, led by Maggie Roberts, a former Knights volleyball player, in 22:18.55. Ashley Britton (22:38.62) and Danielle Moriarty (22:52.10) were fourth and fifth. Sierra's women beat Butte in the team competition. Junta, who is in his first year as head cross country/track and field coach at Shasta College, had mixed feelings after the race. He remained optimistic about the women's team qualifying for the state meet. "Our top three runners are pretty solid," Junta said. "Once we get some of the girls healthy to run behind them, we should have enough to make state." More problematic is the competitive men's side. Junta has experienced runners, but injuries have stung his small squad, including Zeke Bates from Shasta High School and Brice Peters from Yreka High School. They ran below their usual times Saturday because they have only recently got back into running. Haji looks like a sound top runner for Junta and should qualify for state individually. But "there's a lot of work to be done" if the Knights want to qualify for the state as a team, Junta said. Shasta has next week off before the Lou Vasquez meet in San Francisco on Sept. 27. Two days later, the Knights compete in the Stanford Invitational. Reporter Jeffrey Jen
