Season Outlook

"Another Step Forward"

Men:
The Shasta college men look to make a step forward from last year’s squad. This year’s team has as much talent and more depth than last year’s team. This team should content for its first conference title and qualify for the state championships for the first time since 2002.

Leading the way for Shasta College is Sophomore Andrew Milne. Andrew, from Redding Adventist, was the 2008 Golden Valley Champion in the 800M, 1,500M, 5,000M, 10,000M, and 3,000 steeplechase. Andrew should be the top runner in the Golden Valley Conference, as well as one of the top runners in Northern California. Behind Andrew, Shasta College should have lots of depth. Adding to this depth are local products Tyler Bowman (Foothill HS), Ramon Rubio ( Mt. Shasta), Curtis Walbridge ( Central Valley), and John Lambert (Shasta HS). Ramon placed 7th in the Northern Section high school championships last year, while Tyler was a 2007 state qualifier in cross country for Shasta College. Shasta should also get some help from New Jersey import Sharieff Mulkey. As Coach Junta states, “We know what Andrew can do up as our top runner, we just need some other guy’s to improve and step up to the challenge.”

Women: The women’s team should have even loftier goals. This should be one the most talented women’s team that Shasta has had in recent memory. This team should contend for a league title and possibly a Northern California Championships.

The Women’s team will be lead by Sophomore Stephanie Kzenlak. Kzenlak, who competed for Liberty HS and New Mexico State, should be one of the top runners in Northern California and the state of California. Stephanie was 3rd in at the 1999 Div III California state championship with a time 18:12 on the Woodward Park course. Behind Stephanie, the Lady Knights will have a good core of runners. Brittany Williams is returning from a great track and field season in which she was Conference champion in the 5,000M and 8th in the state of California in the 3,000M steeplechase. Stephanie Frescas who is a standout runner from Enterprise HS should also be in Shasta’s top pack. Returnee Danielle Morarity, a state qualifier from last year and newcomer Becca Lightfoot (Foothill HS) should help add depth. Rounding out the squad will be former school record holing swimmer Elise Paul and
returnee Joy Orey.
