Knights Find Their Swing

OLSEN, WADDELL TURN IN SOLID ROUNDS
(Jeffery Jen, Record Searchlight March, 13 2002) Shasta College men's golf coach Kim Tyler said his Knights have plenty of potential this year. The key word here being potential. Shasta has played inconsistently for much of the young season, but strong rounds from Stetson Olsen and Mike Waddell helped the Knights defeat Butte College 386-396 at Wilcox Oaks Country Club. Olsen, Shasta's No. 1 golfer, earned medalist honors with a 1-over-par 73. Waddell carded a 75 to finish second. David Frank (77), Steve Boyer (80) and Kyle Isitt (81) also posted solid scores. "They're shooting better," Tyler said. "It's taken a little longer than expected for them to come around. They are a very talented group and if they can get it together, we should do well this season." Olsen had a consistent round, sitting at even par after 13 holes. But he made bogey on No. 14 and faced much worse on the 17th. Olsen's drive sailed deep into the trees on the right. He punched out beyond the trees and further to the right, but his ball landed in a clearing still inbounds. From there, Olsen hit a wedge shot onto the edge of the green. He even had a 25-foot try at birdie, but missed just to the left to settle for a par. "I thought about getting back to the fairway," Olsen said. "But if I did that, I would have to go through a whole bunch of trees. So I found a way to bypass the trees. That wasn't how it was designed to be, but I'll take what I can get." Olsen closed the gap between him and Butte's Ben Knight, who shot a 76 Tuesday, in the GVC standings. After two matches, Olsen is one stroke back of Knight, who leads at 150. Waddell sits at 155 while Frank is fourth at 158. Shasta made it to the state tournament two years ago and finished seventh in Northern California last season. While Tyler said his team has talent, the current goal is to win another GVC title. "Hopefully, we can win our third league title in a row," Tyler said. "As for state, I don't know. We should make the NorCals, but it depends on how well the other schools are playing when it comes to state. Only the top four in the Northern California can go."
