Three Strokes Short
JAKE AARON SHOOTS PAR
(4/6/04-Riverview CC) When he saw the final team results from Tuesday's Bay Valley Conference match, Shasta College men's golf coach Kim Tyler remarked, "Three strokes from third place. Been that kind of a season for us." Officially, the Knights finished tied for fifth out of seven teams at Riverview Golf and Country Club. However, Shasta came up on the wrong end of a four-cluster that was separated by just two strokes.
Sierra College edged American River 368 to 369 to finish first. Then came the cluster with Delta (380) in third followed by Santa Rosa (381) and then Napa and Shasta (382). Butte brought up the rear at (395).
Jake Aaron led the way for the Knights with an even par-72. The freshman, who played as the Knights' No. 1 golfer for the match, bounced back nicely from a disastrous first shot on the 592-yard, par five first hole that overlooks the Sacramento River. Aaron actually hit into the river and finished with a double-bogey.
Aaron climbed back to even par by the turn and was 1-under heading into the final three holes. However, he missed birdie chances on Nos. 16 and No. 18 and a par putt on No. 17. Still, he finished tied for third in the individual results.
"I made a lot of good putts on the front nine," Aaron said. "I just had some poor ones in the final three holes. I'm pleased. This is the first time I made par on this course. Overall, it was a good day to play golf. Conditions were great and the greens rolled true."
Nick Neal of Sierra and Matt Hollinsead of American River both shot a 2-under 70. Joining Aaron at 72 were Napa's Ryan Trask and Delta's Tommy Edwards.
Other golfers competing for Shasta included Steve Lewis (75), Jeff Berg (77), Jimmy Bennett (78), Kyle Hansen (80) and Marcus McDonald (82). Lewis had a consistent day with a split of 38-37, while Hansen bounced back from a 44 on the front nine to shoot even par on the final nine holes.
While Tyler was pleased was the score, Shasta still got pushed down further in the standings because other teams also played well.
"Normally when we have a lot of scores in the 70s, we're doing pretty good," Tyler said. "But other teams also shot well today. It's happened before. We've been in this same spot before — close but no cigar."
Still, Shasta started the season in the BVC cellar before finally moving past Butte into sixth in recent matches. The Knights are likely to finish in that position, meaning they have no chance to be among the top three teams that advance to the Northern California finals on May 3 in Stockton. Aaron and Berg, however, have a shot to be among the top eight individual conference players to make the field. Shasta has three more conference meets left, including at Fountain Grove Country Club in Santa Rosa next Tuesday.
