Knights Shaping Up

SCORES COMING DOWN
(Shasta College-4/14/05)
Lately, the Knight's golf team has been shaping up. The Knights are playing better and scores are coming down. The biggest changes have been with the 7 through 10 spots. At the beginning of the year the Knight coaches were hoping that every team member would get a chance to compete in a league match, it looks like that goal has been reached. The coaching staff is pleased with the way each golfer has encouraged one another in a team effort. The Knights have formed some solid friendships and maybe even some lifetime friendships. The lowest team score in tournament play has been a 402. This score was posted at Gold Hills Golf Course which is a difficult course to score on. Kyle Hansen continues as our #1 golfer with a stroke average of 79.2 . Following close behind is Austin Wood with a stroke average of 80.3. Calvin Maready's scores have improved and he has been consistently playing in the #3 position. After struggling for a couple of weeks, Bobby Wyatt's scores are again in the normal for him range. Ryan Riggins, Jake Benton and Tim Sain round out the team for league competition. The coaches goal for the team is to break the 400 stroke barrier, which should happen soon. The Knight's next match is at Chardonnay Golf Club in Napa on April 14th at noon. Results to follow when available.
Scores Getting Lower

KYLE HANSEN KNIGHT MEDALIST

(Gold Hills GC-4/5/05)
By Jeffrey Jen, Record Searchlight April 6, 2005 The Shasta College men's golf team's performance isn't measured by placement, but by how low the score has gotten. The Knights finished sixth out of seven teams -- shooting a 402 -- in its lone Bay Valley Conference home match at Gold Hills Country Club on Tuesday. BVC leader Sierra College won the match, the sixth of 11 conference matches this year, with a 372 and had four golfers go lower than 75. San Joaquin Delta, behind medallist Steve Meyer's 3-under 69, was second at 383. Santa Rosa (385), American River (388) and Butte (394) also topped Shasta's score, but Napa (414) brought up the rear. While the result forged a sixth-place tie between Shasta and Napa in conference standings and continued the improvement Knights coach June Szody has been seeking, the scenario could have been even better. Kyle Hansen had the low round for Shasta with a 5-over 77. However, he struggled with his putting all day, as he bogeyed 17 and finished by three-putting 18 from 10 feet. "I let that putt get away from me on No. 17," Hansen said. "Then, I lost my focus on the last hole. It was disappointing. I was striking the ball really well today, but got sloppy at the end. I think I had 34 putts on the day." Shasta's No. 3 golfer Bobby Wyatt finished with an 81 and also lamented his putting when every other part of his game went well. "I must have had 40 putts," Wyatt said. "I think I hit almost every green." The Knights' No. 2 golfer Calvin Maready finished with an 85 after misinterpreting some rules the coaches setout on the day. Szody said he twice replayed his tee shots when he could have played a second ball as an option. Maready also had a little adventure on the day, once hitting a beehive in a tree. However, the bottom three of the lineup came through well for Shasta. Jake Benton shot a 79 and Ryan Riggins (83) and Tim Sain (82) followed with lower-than-expected scores. That was more than enough to overtake Napa. Both teams have 18 points in the standings, far behind Sierra (74) and fifth-place Santa Rosa (48) with five matches to go. Szody said her team is shooting 20-30 strokes better in its team score compared with the start of BVC play. "They are improving," Szody said. "The players are getting the rules down a bit better in knowing what they can do. Each one has improved by several strokes. Hopefully, by the end of the season we'll be right in the middle of the pack." Shasta's next BVC match is at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lincoln Hills Golf Course in Rocklin.
