Match #12
LINCOLN HILLS
(Roseville-4/25/06) Lincoln Hills Golf Club in Roseville, California was the site of the twelfth and final match of the season for the Shasta Men’s golf team and the Big 7 Conference. The low medalist in the final season match was Steve Chung from American River College with a 68. Runner-up was Aaron Briones of San Joaquin Delta College, shooting a 70.. Shasta College lost two low-scoring team members when Reese Fernandez and Matthew Hoy relocated to Las Vegas and San Lorenzo respectively. The loss of the two players damaged the team’s scoring ability. However, the upside of the loss enabled two other team members the opportunity to gain tournament experience this season. Ian Stratte shot his lowest tournament round of the season, posting a nice 87. Ian said he was striking the ball solidly until he encountered difficulties on two of the tough holes at Lincoln Hills. Scoring a 7 and an 11 kept his score from dropping into the 70’s. Cody Goddard shot 95, one of his lowest tournament rounds. Travis Wills sat out this tournament to allow Cody the opportunity to play Lincoln Hills Golf Club. Coach Szody anticipates that Ian, Cody and Travis will be among the low scorers of next year’s team. The big story of the season is that three of the Shasta College men’s golf team qualified for the Northern California Golf Championship. Despite illness, Calvin Maready finished the 18-hole tournament with a score of 85. Dustin Janc and Trenton Lynch both broke into the 70’s for the first time this season. Both men posted very solid 78’s to finish their first collegiate golf season. Coach Szody and Coach Giovannoni are extremely proud of the team camaraderie that developed this year. The team members were very supportive of one another, and, hopefully this very positive attitude will carry over into next season. The coaches are really looking forward to next season. With a few solid high school golfers coming on board next year, coupled with the returning team members, the golf team should be able to post some low team scores. The Northern California Golf Championship will be played at Lincoln Hills Golf Club in Lincoln, California on Monday, May 1 st. The teams will tee off at 7:30 a.m. for the first 18 hole round. The second 18 hole round will tee off immediately after the 30 minute lunch break. It will be a long day for the golfers. The Lincoln Hills Golf Course is a very long track. Stamina will be a key factor for posting low rounds on Monday.
Coach Szody is looking forward to next season.

(Shasta College-4/12/06-Coach Szody)

The lift, clean, and place rule was in effect for the competition. The Shasta College Men’s golf team traveled with only four players competing in Match #10. Illness and spring vacation plans disrupted the normal 6 player team. American River College shot a team score of 398 to win Match #10. Santa Rosa Jr. College came in at 404 to take second place. Calvin Maready shot an 85 for the day’s match to finish is second place. With two tournaments left in the season, Calvin Maready, Dustin Janc and Trenton Lynch look good to qualify for NorCals. Both Maready and Janc have shot steady throughout the season. Lynch’s scores have been steadily improving to secure his position for the NorCal championship. Maready’s average thus far is 77.5; Janc’s average is 80.3 and Lynch’s average is 83.5. The next match will be held at Windsor Golf and Country Club in Santa Rosa on Tuesday, April 18 th. The team will be losing Reese Fernandez after this match. Reese will be going to Las Vegas to accept a position in a mortgage brokering business. After his training and getting settled, he will be continuing his education at the Las Vegas community college. Reese was a solid player for the team, playing in the second and third position most of the season. We all wish him well, and he will be missed as a player and a friend. Match # 8 will be played at the Gold Hills Golf Course on Tuesday, April 4 th at 11:00 a.m.

After a two year layoff from golf, Matt Hoy’s game is beginning to come around. Matt dusted off the clubs, joined the Knights Golf team and began to work on regaining his golf game.
