Good Showing for 2 Knights
MAYBE NEXT YEAR
(Fort Washington CC-Coach Szody-5/7-07) Fort Washington Golf and Country Club proved to be a beautiful venue for this year’s Nor Cal Championship. Not only was the course in beautiful condition and perfectly manicured, but the weather was calm and warm providing the ten teams and six individual qualifiers a fair test for their golfing skills. Kevin Anderson, the Knights’ #1 golfer and Bobby Wyatt the #2 golfer this season both shot 77’s in the day’s first round. The scores set both golfers in fair position going into the day’s final afternoon round. Both Wyatt and Anderson were only 1 over par heading into the final 9 hole stretch. A pulled drive on the 13 th hole put Bobby Wyatt in a poor position to reach the par 4 green. An attempted hook around trees to approach the green failed to draw and left Wyatt eventually putting for a triple bogey. Bobby struggled after that mishap posting a double bogey, double bogey, bogey, par, par to card an 81 for the final round leaving him well out of reach of qualifying for State Championship. Anderson played very solidly in the afternoon round. 1 over par after the outward 9, Kevin shot 2 over par on the back 9 to post a final score of 75. Kevin’s 36 hole total of 152 left him just two shots short of entering into the three man play off for the sixth and last individual spot open for State Championship. Anderson said a couple very good putts just simply didn’t fall preventing him from posting the necessary 73 for a 150 total to compete in the tiebreaker. This was the first time either young man played in college Nor Cals. Coach Szody feels both golfers performed extremely well for a first time Nor Cal appearance. Sierra College beat out Chabot College 735 to 742 to win the championship by 7 strokes. Fresno City College finished in third place with a total of 746 just edging out Cabrillo College’s 747 by one stroke. All four teams will travel with the six low scoring individuals to State Championship in Merced at the Merced Golf and Country Club on Monday May 14th.
Wyatt Advances to NorCals
JOINS TEAMMATE KEVIN ANDERSON
Bobby Wyatt matches his season low round to gain a berth at the #6 spot to qualify for NorCals. Five individual golfers were vying for the last spot coming down to the final match. There was less than a stroke difference between them which included Knight teammate Dustin Janc. Under cool, breezy conditions, Wyatt played a solid round of golf today under the pressure of needing to go low if he was to accompany fellow Knight, Kevin Anderson, to NorCals this season. Anderson was a given, holding the #2 individual spot of the six individual spots available. Dustin shot a good score of 83, which wasn’t quite enough to move him up the scale. Janc will be traveling to NorCals as 1st alternate. Should any of the other six competitors not be able to play on Monday, then Janc will be ready to put his game to the 36 hole test on the Ft. Washington track in Fresno. Kevin Anderson shot a 75 today which helped him secure an All Conference award. Anderson was among the ten low scorers for the season. This accomplishment is the highlight for the Knight’s golf season. Kevin has been accepted to the San Diego Golf Academy beginning in the fall semester. Coach Szody is very pleased at this news, but hopes that Kevin might consider holding off one more season and play for the Knights next spring. Regardless of Anderson’s decision, he will continue to be successful in his golf career. Kevin is a hard worker and dedicated to improving his skills. He is very “coachable” and if he does go to San Diego his mentors will enjoy working with Kevin. Brian Weed shot a very respectable 81 followed by Eric Blanchard’s 82. Cody Goddard shot an 88 for the day, which allowed the Knights to post a team score of 398. Sierra College’s Steve Edman shot a 70 today to earn him the low medalist honors for the season. Edman’s season average of 72.2 beat out team mate Nick Neal’s season average of 72.6 Neal shot a 71 in today’s match. The low round of 68 was shot by Reese Holtz of Santa Rosa Jr. College. The top four teams traveling to NorCals are: 1st, Sierra College; 2 nd, San Joaquin Delta; 3rd, Santa Rosa Jr. College, and 4th, American River College. The Nor Cal Championship will be played on Monday, May 7th on the Ft. Washington Golf & Country Club course in Fresno. Brian Weed and Eric Blanchard will be the only Knight golfers to return for next season. The Knights are hoping to add a few of the low-scoring local high school seniors to the 2008 roster to help boost the Knights to a higher team finish next season. Next Year! Coach Szody and Coach Giovannoni.
Knights Miss Low
PERFECT CONDITIONS
(Riverview CC-Redding-Jeffrey Jen-4/24/07)
With the golf course at Riverview Golf and Country Club in great shape and excellent weather overhead, there were plenty of chances to go low Tuesday. Unfortunately, the Shasta College men's golf team didn't. However, just about every other Big 7 Conference team did. The Knights finished last in the seven-field team with a 413, seven strokes behind Napa. Sierra took first with a 359, followed by San Joaquin Delta at 361. Santa Rosa was third, in at 373, followed by American River (378) and Butte (404). Despite playing close to home, Shasta didn't have its best games on a day where the chances were there. "There were plenty of low scores to be had," said Kevin Anderson, the Knights' No. 1 golfer. "I expected low scores, but we didn't have them today." Anderson shot a 78, the Knights' low round. Shasta's next two golfers, Dustin Janc and Bobby Wyatt, are in a fight for at-large berths to the Northern California tournament on May 7 at the Fort Washington Golf and Country Club in Fresno. Wyatt shot an 80, but felt he could have gone lower, while Janc had an 84. Brian Weed shot an 85 and Eric Blanchard an 86 for the Knights. Anderson and Wyatt view Riverview as a home course of sorts, but both didn't play to their standards. Putting was the main culprit Tuesday for both of them. "I didn't putt well at all," Wyatt said. "Usually I'm in the 70s here. Kevin usually does well here too, but we didn't do so well today." Delta had the two low scores with Aaron Briones getting medalist honors with a 67. Teammate Joey Ferrari shot a 68, while Sierra's Stephen Edmond and American River's Gordon Kashiwagi tied for third with a 69. "The weather was perfect," Knights golf coach June Szody said. "It was a chance for us to do well, but we didn't take advantage. A lot of other guys did take advantage of the course today." Anderson remains in the hunt for an all-league spot and already is a cinch for an at-large berth to NorCals. Wyatt is on the cusp of a berth with one more league match remaining -- at Empire Ranch Golf Course in Folsom at 11 a.m. Tuesday. After that, all that is left is NorCals and the state tournament with the question of how many Knights make it there. Reporter Jeffrey Jen can be reached at 225-8228 or jjen@rRedding.com.
Windy at Catta Verdera
BRIAN WEED LEADS KNIGHTS
(Lincoln-4/17/07) Brian Weed leads Knights to a #5 finish in Lincoln, the #5 golfer for the Shasta College Knights golf team shoots his season best round of 79 to lead the Knights to a #5 finish at the beautiful Catta Verdera Country Club in Lincoln today. Brian met the coaches’ season expectations for his personal game today under extremely windy conditions. Where other scores soared, and the weather remained volatile, Brian remained calm and steady to shoot his personal best round under college competition conditions. Kevin Anderson, the Knights #1 golfer, feeling a bit under the weather after recent dental surgery, struggled under the blustery weather conditions to shoot a higher than normal score of 83. Bobby Wyatt remained steady, after three three putt greens to post a matching score. Paxon Chao playing in his first official tournament match turned in a very respectable 93. Paxon’s scores are gradually improving throughout this season, his first foray into tournament golf. Only playing for a year and a half, Coach Szody is very pleased with his progress. Eric Blanchard remained on the sidelines to recover from strained muscles. He will be competing again in the next match. Cody Goddard posted three high numbers on his scorecard to shoot a much higher than normal 96 for the day. With two season matches remaining, it is very unlikely that the Knights can catch the 5 th place team, Butte CC. Kevin Anderson remains in the #1 position to travel to NorCals as the #1 individual. Bobby Wyatt and Dustin Janc are still within 1 stroke of qualifying in the #6 position of the six available individual spots to qualify for Nor Cal competition. There are seven individuals vying for the #6 spot. The next two tournaments are critical for the final outcome. The next match will be played at the neutral home site of Riverview Golf and Country Club in Redding on Tuesday, April 24 th at 1:00 p.m.
Kevin Anderson Low Knight
SEASON IN REVIEW
(Shasta College-Coach Szody-4/20/07) Kevin Anderson has been the strongest golfer on the Knight’s golf team this season with a scoring average of 76.4. This is Kevin’s first season as a college golfer. Dustin Janc and Bobby Wyatt are consistently shooting in the low 80’s this season. They have switched #2 and #3 positions throughout the season. Both men are sophomores this season. Bobby Wyatt is returning to the Knights after attending College of the Siskiyous for a semester. Bobby’s game has improved dramatically since his freshmen year at Shasta College in 2004. Eric Blanchard, a freshman Knight has played very solidly in the #4 position for the team. Coach Szody is still expecting Eric to break into the 70’s this season. The most improved golfer on the Knights’ team from last year is Cody Goddard. Cody’s golf has improved enough this season to allow him to travel with the team playing in the #5 position. Freshmen Brian Weed’s game continues to improve and he is averaging in the high 80’s to low 90’s this season. Eric has a very sound swing and will definitely continue to improve as he learns the courses and improves his scoring shots into the greens. Shasta College ’s 7 th player this year has only been playing golf for a year and a half. Paxon Chao, a sophomore, joined the team this year to work on his game and improve his scoring abilities. Paxon has a wonderful classic golf swing and should improve immensely over the next year. He will be a low handicap golfer and enjoy the game for many years. The highlight thus far for the Knights golf team is that Kevin Anderson will most likely be qualifying as an individual to travel to the Northern California Championship. Dustin Janc and Bobby Wyatt are on the bubble right now at # 7 and #8. If their scores can drop by a couple strokes for each of the next three tournaments, they will also have a chance to attend NorCals. The top four teams from the Big 7 League and the 6 low scoring individual golfers have the opportunity to attend NorCals.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE FIRST NINE
This season has the Sierra College Wolverines leading the league by a commanding 14 points through tournament #9. Santa Rosa and San Joaquin Delta were keeping the gap at a minimum until the last three tournaments had Sierra pulling away without looking back. The young team members of Sierra, Delta and Santa Rosa are all capable of shooting solid scores in the low 70’s, mid 70’s and high 70’s. The three strong teams have led the league from Match #1. American River and Butte College are comprised of golfers who can steadily shoot in the mid 70’s to low 80’s. Napa Valley and Shasta College golfers are shooting fairly sound scores in the mid 70’s to mid 80’s. Napa Valley and Shasta are fighting it out to finish the season in 6th place in the Big 7 League this season. The League stand-out this year is Nick Neal of Sierra College with a season average of 73, followed by Stephen Edman of Sierra College with a season average of 73.9. Tyson Saraceni of Santa Rosa Junior College is close behind with a scoring average of 74.9. Kevin Anderson of Shasta College and Joey Ferrari are tied for fifth place in the league with a scoring average of 76.4. With only three tournaments to go in regular season competition, the Sierra Wolverines will be extremely hard to catch. Santa Rosa and Delta are very solid teams and I certainly wouldn’t rule them out yet. Match #10 will have the Big 7 League competing at Catte Verdera (12 Bridges) in Lincoln, Ca. on Tuesday, April 17th at 11:00 a.m.
Anderson Medalist
MATCH AT TEAL BEND!
(Coach Szody-3/14/07) The Big 7 conference held Match #3 at Teal Bend in Sacramento. American River College was the host for the match held under beautiful weather conditions. Shasta College's Kevin Anderson shot a low round of 71 to capture Medalist honors. Anderson is a graduate of Shasta High School in Redding and is a native Redding resident. Kevin enjoyed good course and weather conditions today to exhibit his very talented golf game. However, it wasn’t quite enough to bring the Knights’ team score to less than 400. Shasta finished sixth and remains in sixth place after Match #3 just above Napa Valley. Dustin Janc shot a solid 81 today to finish second on the Knights’ team. Brian Weed and Eric Blanchard both shot 86’s in today’s round. Rounding out the team effort shooting an 88 was Cody Goddard with Bobby Wyatt posting a 93. Goddard and Wyatt both shot excellent rounds in the 70’s last week’s practice round at Teal Bend. A little misadventure caused Bobby’s score to soar today. An unfortunate misunderstanding of a two ball rule caused Bobby to lose six strokes. Next match should see Wyatt’s score back within the normal range for his golfing skills. A couple penalty shots incurred by Goddard pushed his round up much higher than his previous outing also. Coach Szody is expecting the team score to drop over the next couple matches to put the team in at least a fourth or fifth place position in the Big 7. The next match will be held on Thursday, March 15 th at Oakmont CC in Napa at 11:00 a.m.
