Outlook

The spring of 2007 will have June Szody returning for the third season as the Head Coach for the Shasta College Men’s golf team. The number one golfer and the number seven golfer from the 2006 season will be completing their sophomore year while competing once again for the Knights. Several freshmen will be joining the team this year bringing with them top competitive games honed during their high school golf competitions. Also joining the team this year from Las Vegas, is a highly skilled amateur World Long Driving Championship competitor with very fine short game skills and a solid game. After a one year lay-off from golf, a 2005 Knight’s golfer, will be returning to play for the team this season.

The new home course for the Shasta College Knights will be the beautiful Golf Club of Tierra Oaks. General Manager, Mike Konjoyan, and Head Golf Professional, Travis Grisham, the staff and the members of this private club have extended full courtesies to the Shasta College golf team. Shasta College, the golf coaches and the team members gratefully appreciate having such a beautiful course on which to compete. The home “neutral” course this year will be Riverview Golf and Country Club located on the beautiful Sacramento River. Our collective thanks goes to Kim Thurman, Head Golf Professional, the Riverview staff and the members for the use of their private club for our home “neutral” site.

Coach Szody, an LPGA, Class “A” golf professional with 25 years of teaching experience will be assisted by Coach Lynn “Jo” Giovannoni. Lynn’s 32 + years of coaching experience are invaluable to the team. The goal for this season is for each team member to meet their academic and athletic potential while finishing strong in the Big 7 Conference.

The eight talented individuals are melding nicely as a team and Coach Szody and Giovannoni are looking forward to a successful golf season.

THE TEAM :

KEVIN ANDERSON , Freshman. A Redding native. Shasta High School graduate. Major: Business. Kevin maintains a 2.8 GPA. Kevin received the Tony Jeantet Memorial award in the amount of $200.00.

While attending Shasta High School Kevin was the #1 golfer four years running. In 2004 he was named MVP for the team and made All League, and was the youngest golfer from Shasta High School in 15 years to make it to Nor-Cals. The following season he made it to Nor-Cals again, made All League, and was the #2 golfer in the Northern Section. In 2002 and 2003 Kevin won the Redding Open for his age division. In June of 2005 he qualified for the Championship Round in the Redding Pro-Am as an amateur. In June of 2005 Kevin was invited to play in the Dropping Invitational in Boise, Idaho and placed 4 th out of a field of 64 players. Kevin plans on attending San Diego Golf Academy in 2008 to earn his business degree and a Class “A” teaching credential for golf. Kevin will be a great asset to the team.

ERIC BLANCHARD , Freshman. A Redding native. Major: Business. Foothill High School graduate. Eric started golfing at the age of 8 years old, but didn’t take it seriously until his sophomore year in high school. He was a member of Redding Jr. Golf for 6 years and played on the Foothill High School golf team for 3 years. Eric was a member of the Redding Ducks swim team and won many first place trophies and NVAL awards. Eric achieved a 4.0 GPA his freshman year of high school then maintained a 3.34 GPA throughout high school. Eric is entertaining the idea of a career in money management. I fully expect Eric to be a strong contributor to the team.

CODY GODDARD , Sophomore. A Hanford, California native. Major: Business. He attended Foothill High School where he played on the men’s golf team for 3 years while being on the honor roll all three years. Cody enjoys all outdoor sporting activities. He is a return athlete for the Shasta College Men’s golf team. His good attitude, demeanor and golfing skills should be an asset to the team this year. I was very pleased to have Cody join the team for his second season.

PAXON CHAO , Sophomore. A Redding native. 2004 graduate of Enterprise High School. Major: Business. He played varsity basketball his senior year of high school. Paxon achieved a 3.75 GPA last semester. Paxon is currently earning a pilot’s license. Paxon has been playing golf for about 1 1/2 years. Already, he possesses a very skilled golf swing and understands the game beyond his years of experience. Paxon’s goals for this year are to gain valuable tournament experience and become one of the top golfers on the team. I think his goals are definitely attainable

DUSTIN JANC , Sophomore. Redding native. Major: Construction Management. He attended West Valley High School. Dustin has been playing golf for 9 years. He played for four years on the West Valley high School golf team. Dustin was an All League/Academic Athlete for basketball and twice for golf. Dustin was chosen to play in the Northern Athletic League All Star basketball game. The West Valley golf team won League two of the four years Dustin was a member. Dustin was Scholar Athlete all throughout high school, maintaining a 3.5 GPA. Dusty is returning for his second year on the Shasta College Men’s golf team. He was consistently the # 1 or # 2 golfer on the team and qualified for Nor-Cals. I know Dustin will again contribute strongly to the team this year.

BRIAN WEED, Freshman. Alturas, California native. Modoc High School. Major: Business. Brian played golf all fours years of high school. His Modoc Highs School golf team won league all four years.

Brian enjoys all outdoor activities, especially golf and hunting. Brian has an extremely sound golf swing and golf game. I fully expect that he will be one of the low scorers in league this season. I look forward to working with him and watching how he manages the tight tree-lined home course venue.

BOBBY WYATT , Sophomore, Weed, California native. Major: Undeclared. Bobby played golf for three years on the Weed High School golf team. He earned All-SCL honors both his junior and senior years. Bobby was voted MVP his senior year. He also played football and basketball while in high school. Bobby was on the honor roll through high school and last semester while attending COS earned over a 3.0 GPA. He played golf for Shasta College in 2005. I look forward to having Bobby on the team once again. He has a sound golf swing, and when he tames the tree-lined fairways of Tierra Oaks, he will be one of our top players this season. Welcome back, Bobby.
