SEASON OUTLOOK
Early Chemistry
The Shasta College Knights are entering into the season with an
interesting mix of players. Coach Fitzhugh is very excited about the
early chemistry of this year’s team. He feels, “They have a genuine
enjoyment of each other’s company and have spent a lot of time
together to improve their basketball skills.” This team is entering
the season with high expectations for themselves. With a growing
sense of team-confidence, Coach Fitzhugh feels it could be an
interesting year. “We have the potential to place a very tall and
strong team on the court and have the option of placing a smaller,
quicker squad on the court” Coach Fitzhugh explains. It should be
fun to see have the team develops.
The Knights are returning three players from the 2006-07 season
(12-15 overall / 6-4 GVC). Geoff Smith (6’1 – Guard), Alex Ward
(6’6 – Swingman) and Keaton Welch (6’7 – Post) all played significant
time last season for the Knights and are much improved. A returning
All-Conference letterman, from the 2006 GVC Championship team, is
Trevor Ray (6’0 – Guard). Trevor is retuning to the team after red-shirting
last season, due to an off-season surgery. Coach Fitzhugh feels “Trevor
has worked very hard to get back into playing shape. He seems to be
fully recovered and very motivated for his sophomore season.”
Garrick McDowell (7’1 – center) returns to the Knights after a three
year absence. Garrick served a LDS mission for two years in Peru. He
returned back to Redding last year to red-shirt, giving himself time to
readjust to the faster lifestyle of the United States.
The Knights will get a much welcomed boost from Derek Oestreicher
(6”11 – Forward). Derek returns home for one season, after red-shirting
last year at the University of New Mexico. Derek has already committed to
attend the University of California, Davis next season on a full athletic-scholarship to play for the
Division I, Aggies.
Other newcomers will feature many familiar names
from the north state:
Troy Duenas (5’10 – West Valley High School)
Kyle Shreeve (6’0 – West Valley High School)
Jamien Jones (6’3 – Trinity High School)
Drew Meyer (6’1 – Dunsmeir High School)
KJ Graham (6’0 – Folsom High School)
Dylan Nelson (6’6 – Redding Christian High School)
Nikolas Nott (6’2 – Silver Creek High School)
Bryan Kobe (6’4 – Central Valley High School)
Cody Lesley (6’0 – Del Norte High School)
