Big Setback
MODESTO FINISHES OFF KNIGHTS
(11/12/02-Shasta College)
With the junior college soccer playoffs on the horizon and each team in need of a win, Tuesday's showdown at Shasta College had a lot at stake for both teams. But it was visiting Modesto that came out on top 3-1, dealing a blow to the Shasta College men's slim postseason hopes. The Knights, who were hampered by injuries, couldn't convert on two scoring opportunities that would have given them an early lead. They only managed to land one of their 17 shots on goal. "It was really frustrating, we just couldn't seem to get the breaks tonight," Shasta coach Rich Bourne said. The only break the Knights did get came on a penalty kick halfway through the second period, when Kellin Moore took the rebound off his blocked penalty shot and chipped it into the upper-right corner of the goal. The score pulled Shasta back into the game, narrowing Modesto's lead to 2-1 and forcing the visiting Pirates to play on their heels. "My hat goes off to them, they played great in the second half. After they had that goal it really turned the game around. They beat us in the second half," Modesto Coach Darrel Wilkins said after the game. Shasta's late-game rally was cut short when Modesto's Edgar Mora scored on a breakaway with five minutes left in the game. Modesto took a 2-0 lead early in the first period off a header by Scottie Costa and on a goal by Will Brahic. Trailing by two most of the match, Shasta stayed close with great play from its back line, allowing only eight shots on goal. "They hung in there. They gave everything they had. That's just the heart of Shasta," Bourne said. "Our back line played well all year; Trevor Kates barely made a mistake the whole season; Anthony Powell, Matt Swartz, they all played well." The loss all but kills the Knights' playoff hopes. Shasta (8-9-2) needs a combination of losses from several other schools to earn a postseason berth. The victory for Modesto improves it to 12-7-1 on the year and secures the Pirates a postseason bid.

Still in the Hunt
NEED A WIN vs. MODESTO
(11/9/02-Shasta College) Even with a 4-4 tie against Contra Costa the Knights can still make the playoffs with a win in their last game on Tuesday against Modesto. Kellin Moore scored his second goal of the game in the second half to give the Knights a 4-3 lead with about 5 minutes to play. The Knights had crawled back into the game after falling behind 3-1. Ben Bowen was the other Knight to score, he also had 2 goals.
Knights Roll Marin
SOLID GAME
(11/5/02-Marin) With Scott Morgan, Dave Landaeta and Jason Carreos each scoring a goal for Shasta (8-8 Bay Valley Conference), the Knights had a easy game in beating Marin 3-1.
Big Blow
OUT SHOOT CRC BUT LOSE
(11/01/02-Shasta College) The Hawks sent the Knights to defeat by making a corner kick with seconds left in the contest. Shasta (7-8 Bay Valley Conference, 9-8-1) outshot Cosumnes River 20-5, but still suffered a big blow to its playoff hopes.

Knights Get a Forfeit
NAPA UNABLE TO FIELD A TEAM
(10/25/02-Shasta College-Article from the Redding Record Searchlight) The Shasta men's soccer team didn't have to take the field to get a victory after its opponent Napa forfeited because of a lack of players. While the team was disappointed about not playing the game, the forfeit still improves the Knights' record to 7-6 in the Bay Valley Conference and keeps them on pace for a playoff berth. Shasta (9-6-1) has a big game at Santa Rosa on Tuesday. The Bear Cubs lead the BVC in the standings, but if the Knights can get a win or even a tie, they would greatly improve their postseason chances. Shasta also has an important home game against Cosumnes River on Friday.

Mad Dash
TOP FOUR TEAMS MAKE PLAYOFFS
(10/24/02-Jeffery Jen-Redding Record Searchlight) The Shasta College men's soccer team is finding itself in a mad dash for a playoff spot heading into the season's final few weeks. Shasta stands at 6-6 in the 10-team Bay Valley Conference. The top four teams make the playoffs. Powerhouse Santa Rosa is leading the BVC standings, but Shasta finds itself in a six-team scramble for the other three spots with Contra Costa, American River, Yuba, Modesto and Cosumnes River. So with six games remaining, Knights coach Rich Bourne figures his team needs to win at least four and possibly five games to make the post season. Shasta has to play at Santa Rosa next Tuesday. But four of the other five games are at home with the other road game against one of the league's cellar-dwellers, Marin, on Nov. 5. Friday's home game is another bottom-feeder in Napa. That leaves three home games against Cosumnes River (Nov. 1), Contra Costa (Nov. 8) and Modesto (Nov. 12) in which the Knights' playoff fate likely lies.

Donut for Delta
DAVID LANAETA WITH TWO GOALS
(10/22/02-Stockton) The Knights road the bus for a long ride to Stockton and still came away with a victory, beating Delta 4-0. Scott Morgan and Lance Pimentel scored goals for the Knights in the first half while David Lanaeta added two in the second half. The Knights and now 6-6 in conference play and 8-6-1 overall.
Knights Rout Yuba
FOUR KNIGHTS SCORE!
(10/17/02) The Knights had a spectacular game in routing Yuba 5-0. Scott Morgan led the Shasta attack with two goals. Lance Pimentel, Ty Craig and Matt Swartz all had one goal apiece in the win for the Knights (5-5 in Bay Valley Conference, 7-6-1).

Not Enough Offense
LONG RIDE TO MODESTO
(10/11/02-Modesto) The Knights were not able to muster enough offense in a 2-1 loss to Modesto College in Modesto. Dave Lanaeta got the Knights lone goal in the second half for the Knights (4-5-1).
Knights Shutout Marin
MARK LEWIS PERFECT IN GOAL

(10/4/02-Shasta College) The Shasta soccer team decided to play one of it's best games of the year on Friday in Redding. Against Marin College the got six goals and outstanding keeper play in a 6-0 win. The Knights had a dominating first-half performance racking up five goals by, Kellin Moore (three assists), Ty Craig, Lance Pimentel and Carson Brady. Sweeper Eric Prosperi lead Shasta's defensive stand that featured four saves by goalie Mark Lewis. The Knights are now 6-3-1 (4-3 in league).

Defense Shuts Down Napa
LANDAETA, CRAIG & MOORE SCORE
(9/24/02-Napa) When you have a strong defense you have a chance to win every time you take the field. So it goes without saying, that when you don't let an opponent score you have a chance to win every game. The Knights (2-2 GVC, 4-2-1 Overall) and their strong defense did a number on Napa, winning 3-0. The Knights got goals from Dave Landaeta, Ty Craig and Kellin Moore to get the road win in Napa.
ARC Wears Down Knights
THREE GOALS IN FINAL 25 MINUTES
(9/14/02-Jeffery Jen Record Searchlight)
For the first 60 minutes, the Shasta College men's soccer team kept pace with powerhouse American River. Then fatigue set in and, just like that, the Knights' hopes of a win or a tie were gone. American River scored three goals in the last 25 minutes to come away with a 4-1 victory over host Shasta on Friday. After being down 1-0 at half-time, Shasta (2-1-1) tied the game when forward Lance Pimentel scored five minutes into the second half. The sophomore received the ball at midfield about 20 yards from the goal. He went right, faked out the defender there and spun around to his left. Right after the spin, the right-footed Pimentel unloaded a big shot from his left foot. The ball found the upper left-hand corner of the net. "The ball was coming at me," Pimentel said. "I just faked one way and went the other and hit it really good, and it went in. It's one of the best goals I've ever had." The score flustered the Beavers a bit. They took some wild shots at the Shasta net in the next few minutes. But American River eventually settled down and took the lead again 20 minutes later on a Charles Jenkins goal. That took the wind out the Knights' sails. A few minutes later, a free kick by the Beavers' James Perez bounced off the hands of Knights goalkeeper Pete Dateman and into the net for a 3-1 lead. Another free kick by American River yielded the game's first goal in the first half when the kick went over Dateman and a whole slew of players, bounced down in front of the net and was headed in by the Beavers' Lee Furman. Shasta had a couple of opportunities to score in the first half. The best was near the end of the half when freshman forward Ty Craig bounced on a defensive turnover by American River and one-timed a shot just wide of the right goal post. After Pimentel's goal, Shasta didn't have many chances, the best being Jason Carreos' header that went just over the crossbar. "I was very proud of the way we played," said Rich Bourne, Shasta's coach. "The score did not reflect how well we played. We controlled the ball more in the first half and then we got the goal in the second half. It's just that we got tired and suffered some injuries near the end."
Knights Roll Simpson, Again
SECOND 4-0 WIN
(9/10/02-Shasta College) It was evident in the first minute of play that the Knights(2-0-1) were a faster team than the Simpson Vanguards. Barely 45 seconds into the match, Scott Morgan, showed Simpson what they were up against. Scott scored an unassisted goal on a breakaway, one of his two goals on the day to put the Knights infront early. Lance Pimentel and Jason Carreas booted goals in the second half to make the final score 4-0 Knights.
Knights Shutout Simpson

(8/30/02-Simpson College) The Shasta College men's soccer team opened its 2002 season with a 4-0 rout at Simpson College on Thursday.
The Knights (1-0) got goals from Lance Pinentel, Ty Craig, Kellin Moore and Trevor Kates. Shasta took advantage of Simpson's defensive lapses to post a 3-0 lead at half-time. Simpson (0-1) wound up out-shooting Shasta 10-4.
