Dieter with a Hat Trick+
FOUR GOALS & AN ASSIST TOO!!
(Shasta College-Jeffrey Jen Record Searchlight- 10/18/05) The last time Dieter Salters scored four goals in a game was in a recreation league as a 13-year-old.
However, his Shasta College men's soccer teammates kept giving him the ball once they realized no one from the College of Marin could keep up with the speedy freshman forward. The result was a convincing 5-1 victory over visiting Marin at the Shasta College soccer field Tuesday.
In addition to his four goals, Salters assisted on the Knights' fifth goal -- scored by Miguel Hernandez. "I was just in the right place at the right time," Salters said. "My teammates kept passing the ball to me." Salters hardly was a one-man show for Shasta (3-2-1 Bay Valley Conference, 6-5-3), who consistently controlled possession of the ball and were on the attack much of the game. The victory moves the Knights up in the standings prior to key road games at Napa Valley on Friday and Feather River on Oct. 28. "When they are good, they are very good," Knights head coach Rich Bourne said about his team. "When they are bad, well, things are really bad. There is nowhere in between." Against Marin, Shasta was very good, indeed. The Knights got a boost from Salters' move up front from right-side midfield because of injuries. Salters opened the scoring in the 15th minute when he ran past a Marin defender on a pass from Hiroaka Umechaia and beat Marin goalkeeper Bryan Koppel from the right side. Marin tied things up three minutes later on a goal from Edson Costa, but Salters helped regain the lead in the 28th minute when his shot from 15 yards out glanced off the right goal post and into the net. Salters also hit a great cross to Hernandez a few minutes later, but Hernandez muffed what should have been an easy goal from a yard out, kicking it over the crossbar instead. Hernandez redeemed himself in the 43rd minute when he got another pass from Salters along the right side and sent a shot into the left corner of the goal for a 3-1 Knights lead. In the second half, Salters immediately added his third goal of the day, again outrunning Marin defenders toward a ball from Fernando Barrera. He then deked the Marin goalie out of a position, faking right and going left before kicking into an undefended net for a 4-1 lead. Later in the half, Salters was involved in a scramble in front of the goal. Hernandez got control of the ball, dribbled right and hit a nice cross to a wide open Salters, who headed the ball in for his fourth goal. "This is a very talented team," said Salters, who played club soccer and at Enterprise High School. "(It's) one of the most talented I've ever been on. We have a lot of players who have good ball control and can pass the ball around." Bourne pointed out the team is still young with 20 of its 22 players considered freshmen. While the team has lacked some consistency, the coach believes things have gone better than he had hoped prior to the season. "We have guys up front who are fast, we have midfielders who can pass and we have speed even in the back row," Bourne said. "All around, we have speed and that definitely helps." Surplus
CUTS FOR THE FIRST TIME
(Shasta College-8/25/05-Jeffrey Jen Record Searchlight) For the first time, Head Coach Rich Bourne is going to have to make cuts because of a surplus of newcomers. He'll have a young team that might be experienced enough to make a run toward a playoff berth. But this is still a growing program, one which kicks off the season with two homes games: Modesto on Tuesday and Evergreen on Sept. 3.
