Knights Tie Up Yuba
MALLONI & SALTERS SCORE

Knights Head to League Play
HOME NEXT OCT. 5th
(9/24/07-Jeffrey Jen) The Shasta College men's soccer team isn't headed into Bay Valley Conference action on a positive. The Knights lost for the second time in two days as Modesto blanked Shasta 6-0 on Tuesday. The Knights fell to American River on Monday by the same score. Modesto came in ranked sixth in Northern California and proved worthy of its rank. The Pirates' Martin Molina and Joshua Handley netted goals in the first six minutes of play. Shasta, on the other hand, couldn't covert any of its chances near the end of the first half. Nicholas Han didn't finish a break in the 38th minute. Three minutes later, Harry Petty's shot rolled wide right. "We had four or five good scoring chances," Knights coach Jesse Banda said. "None of them went in." Playing back-to-back took its toll on Shasta, especially with a flu bug circulating around the team. "The team got worn down by the second half," Banda said. "Playing two straight days is tough." Modesto scored four goals between the 60th and 85th minutes, leaving Shasta to go back to drawing board of sorts. The Knights travel to Feather River College on Friday to start BVC play, putting an end to a brutal non-conference schedule. Shasta faced the top two teams in Northern California, Foothill and Santa Rosa, in addition to American River College and Modesto. Modesto (6-2-2) took the offensive from the outset and relentlessly came at Shasta's keepers. "We wanted to come out aggressive early," Pirates coach Darrel Wilkins said. "Numbers show that the team that usually scores first wins. We had a long bus ride up here, so we had plenty of time to talk about getting off to quick start." Ky Strickler made 15 saves in net for Shasta in allowing three of the goals. The other three came in the second half against Shin Gabriel, a goal by Bryan Pires and two more from Leonard Gonsalvez. Stricker returned in net and was unable to halt a breakaway from Tim Geerlof. The Knights don't return home until they play Contra Costa on Oct. 5.
