"Solid Citizen & Clutch Hitter"

Monique Kelley had a tournament she won't soon forget. In the Fresno City College sponsored, "Bash at Buchanan," Monique had clutch hit after clutch hit. "She hit the ball hard every at bat in the tournament," said Assistant Coach Amy Knowles. For her outstanding tournament she was named to the All-Tourney team. In one two game stretch "Mo" was 6 for 7 with 4 doubles and 6 RBIs! "The coaching staff has tremendous confidence in "Mo." So much so that we have her call all of our pitches," says Head Coach Sonny Stupek. "
When we need a clutch hit she always seems to come up with it. Monique is also just a great person as well, a solid citizen. Another trait that we love in "Mo" is the way she plays the game. She may not be our fastest runner but she certainly runs the hardest." Monique, and her twin sister Michelle, already know where they will be playing softball the next two seasons. They have both signed full ride scholarships to play for San Jose State University.

Ciara is having an outstanding freshman year at Shasta College.
She was the Lady Knights #1 cross country runner all season long and she finished the season by winning the Women's GVC Championship! Well, Ciara is at it again, this time in track. At the Panther Invitational in Sacramento she broke the Shasta College record in the steeple chase by over 2 minutes and became the #1 ranked steeple chase runner in the state in the process. "Ciara has a very bright future," says Head Coach Pete Giachetti. "She is a very dedicated, hard working and gifted runner. Ciara should draw a lot of interest from four year schools for potential scholarships. She does everything we ask and more, she is very, very coachable. This week she will run in the 4 x 400 relay immediately after finishing the 5,000! Ciara is always willing to do what she can to help the team. "Fortunate Catch"
Jordan Prado is a fortunate catch for the Knight coaching staff. "We had scouted him in high school and we knew that he was a great player," says Head Coach Brad Rupert. Unfortunately for the Knights Jordan headed to Santa Clara for his first year of college. But luckily for Shasta, Jordan decided to return after that one year away and play baseball for the Knights. Jordan approaches the game the way the Knight coaching staff likes. "You must be a disciplined hitter when you hit third in our batting order. Third is our primary RBI spot, he is a perfect number three hitter for us. What makes Jordan such a good player is his approach to the game, he is a very steady and he is a very disciplined hitter. He approaches each at bat one at a time," says Coach Rupert. "He is one of our team leaders, he has a great attitude, he is a stabilizing force for us. He just plays the game!" Jordan is currently hitting .375 and is in the top 3 in hitting categories for the Knights in games played, batting average, hits, doubles and total bases. "He is also one of our most versatile players, he can play infield as well as the outfield, and with his bat he will always be somewhere in our lineup," said Coach Rupert.

KNIGHT PROFILE - Softball Star- Chrissy Joseph
One reason the Knight softball team is off to a great start is because of the play of sophomore first baseman, Chrissy Joseph. "I knew she was going to have a great year," said assistant coach Amy Knowles. "She is a great athlete and she worked so hard in the off season." Nicknamed "Chris Joe" by her teammates, she recently helped the Knights sweep Feather River College. Chrissy had a clutch seventh inning 2 run single
to keep the Lady Knights in first place. "She is an incredible athlete," said head coach Sonny Stupek. "She has had some big hits this season for us but she has also made some great defensive plays as well. She made 4 or 5 great plays against Feather River alone! She should be a Hall of Famer when she is done here, she is really, really good, one of the best first basemen we have had here." Chrissy is a two sport star for the Knights. She also helped the Knights volleyball team win the championship this past season.

KNIGHT PROFILE - Swimming Superstar - Laura Hall
There are several reasons why the Knight's swimming coaches are optimistic about this season. One of those "reasons" is freshman swimmer Laura Hall. All Laura did in her first weekend of swimming was set 5 school records! "I can not remember in the history of Shasta College swimming that another swimmer has done what Laura did in those two days," said Head Coach Bob Smith. "Laura had an incredible weekend! There is no telling how good Laura can be, she has been out of swimming for the last 4 years and is only in her 9th week of training. Laura is very well liked by her teammates and she is a hard worker. We look for her to own most of the Shasta College records when she leaves here." Laura now owns 5 Shasta College records-50 Breaststroke (32.64), 50 Backstroke (29.15), 100 Butterfly (1:01.71), 100 Backstroke (1:02.76) and the 200 Freestyle (1:59.78) Laura presents a pleasant problem for the Knight coaching staff, what events should she swim in? "Laura is so talented we have to make sure we do not swim her in too many events!,"said Head Coach Bob Smith.

"Losing the sophomore leadership from last season we needed someone to step up and give us some direction, Tim has done just that. He is a smart player and a tenacious defender. He plays at a level most players don't play at, he plays at 150% every second he is on the court." Tim was an honorable mention all conference pick last season. KNIGHT PROFILE - Tourney MVP - Jenna LaRose
Head Coach Jerry Brown has the Lady Knights off to another great start. One reason for their great start is because of the play of point guard, Jenna LaRose. The Lady Knights are 11-3 on the season and they have already won two tournaments. In winning their last tournament, the Monterey Peninsula College Challenge, "Nena" was named tournament Most Valuable Player. In the second game of the tournament Jenna had 25 Points 10 rebounds and 6 assists! Jenna has played both guard positions this season but she might have found a home at the "point." Head Coach Jerry Brown says, "Jenna really has stepped up her game. The better the team is we are playing the better she plays. Jenna has all the tools to be a great player for us. She has the rare combination of size (5' 9") and strength that you don't usually see in point guards. She is tough to guard." Another trait you notice when you watch Jenna play is her intensity, "She plays hard, no one will out hustle Jenna," says Coach Brown.

She was also named the MVP of the College of the Redwoods Tournament that the Lady Knights won this past weekend. In the COR Tourney, Hannah averaged 28.5 points per game! In the first game, a 71-51 rout of DVC, Hannah was 9-10 from the free throw line! Coach Brown says about Hannah, "Even though she is not the tallest, she is with out question one of the top post players in the state. She makes up for her size with hustle and effort. KNIGHT PROFILE - Star Wrestler - Eddie Locke
Knight wrestler, Eddie Locke, had a dream Saturday at the NorCal Duals held this last weekend in Santa Rosa. As a matter of fact Eddie had a perfect Saturday going 5-0 against the best wrestlers in Northern California. His performance helped the Knights to a 5th place in the tournament. He normally wrestles at 174 pounds but for this tournament he wrestled "up" at 184 pounds. Eddie originally enrolled at Oregon State University after his senior year at Anderson High School. He transferred from OSU to back Shasta College because of financial concerns. That turned out to be a great break for the Knight's wrestling program. Eddie is also enjoying wrestling because his friend, Rob McCalister, is wrestling for the Knights. Head Coach Max Burch says that Eddie is one of the toughest wrestlers on the team this season and he is looking for big things from Eddie at the state championships in December. Eddie would like to transfer to OSU or Cal Poly after his Shasta College career is over.

Wrestling is a very demanding sport. To be a great wrestler you must be in great physical shape, have great technique and be very competitive. Knight wrestler, Raul Lopez, has all of those traits and more. "Raul is a very hard worker, he is very competitive and he possesses great technique," says Head Coach Max Burch. "His best trait might be his quickness." Raul is currently the second ranked 141 pounder in the state. He helped the Knights beat Sierra (33-16) yesterday when he pinned his opponent. Raul is also one of the reasons the Knight wrestlers are off to a 3-0 start and ranked #5 in the state! He is also an ex-marine, as in United States Marines. At Orland High School, Raul was a 3 time all-section wrestler. For financial reasons, Raul enlisted in the Marines for four years straight out of high school. Now he is using that Marine toughness on the mat. After wrestling for the Knights, Raul would like to finish his college career at UC Davis. Semper Fi!!

When you have an offense that is averaging 569 yards and 47 points per game you must have offensive lineman who can protect the quarterback. The Knight's offensive line is doing just that, and the leader of that group is sophomore, Jeremy Kenyon. Head Coach Craig Thompson says that, "Jeremy uses every opportunity to improve as a player. He is one of our hardest workers and he is very tough, he is also a tenacious blocker." The offensive lineman are graded using a statistic called "will breakers." A "will breaker" is an outstanding block, it could even be a pancake block, where a defensive player is blocked onto his back. Jeremy leads the "O" lineman with 23 will breakers in only 3 games. Freshman wide receiver, Joe Irelan, had a great first game for the Knights. Against Mendocino Joe caught 8 passes for 202 total yards and 2 touchdowns. One of those 8 passes also broke a school record! The record breaker was a 97 yard touchdown reception from Quarterback Kyle Nelson that Joe caught in the second quarter. The previous record was a 96 yard TD reception from CFL Star, Ricky Ray, to Chris Thomas in a 1998 game against Laney College. Joe did make the all conference team in high school, in basketball! Even more amazing is that Joe did not play high school football! The Knights look to have a high powered offense this season and Joe is one of the big reasons why. Joe would like to play football next season at the University of North Carolina.

(Web Master note - Joe also had a great second and third game for the Knights. In a 34-24 win over College of the Redwoods Joe caught another 8 passes but this time for 269 yards and 2 touchdowns. Joe had catches of 84, 75 and 62 yards! Then against Sac City Joe caught 7 more passes for 211 yards and 4 touchdowns including a game clinching 85 yard touchdown pass to start the fourth quarter. Kyle also had 146 competitions out of 251 attempts with 11 touchdowns last season. With only 2 returning offensive players, Kyle will be looked upon to be a team leader for the Knights this season.
