LEADING THE TEAM IN BATTING AVERAGE .418!
(Shasta College-4/26/05) There are several reasons that the Knight's baseball team is in contention for a Golden Valley Championship. One of those reasons is first baseman Allen Smith. "Allen has been our best hitter this season," said Head Coach Brad Rupert. "Allen has been solid offensively all year.  He puts in a lot of time working on his swing, and its paying off for him. He has come through in the clutch for us several times this season, we would not be in contention for a league title without him." One thing is also certain about Allen, he is a player that Knight fans enjoy watching hit!

THREE PITCH ACE
(Shasta College-4/26/05) Every baseball team needs an ace. An ace is a pitcher that
a team can count on to consistently pitch a great game. A pitcher a team can count on to get them a win. Shasta College has an ace, starting
pitcher Berek Fasking. "Berek, has developed a better curve ball this year which has given him a third pitch," says Head Coach Brad Rupert. "Last year he threw a fastball and a change-up.  He has won some big games for us  with his command of the strike zone and his ability to throw his breaking ball at any time. When he takes the mound the team knows that we have a great chance to win the game. He should do
well at the next level. "

Long Distance Record Holder!
BREAKS SCHOOL RECORD BY 28+ SECONDS!
Janessa Hoppe has performed an amazing feat. All the Freshman from Enterprise High School did was break a Shasta College track record by 28+ seconds in the steeple chase.
"Janessa is a very talented middle distance runner," says track coach Pete Giachetti." She was one of the top high school runners during her stay at Enterprise High and now she is one of the top runners in the state of California at the community college level. On her third outing in the steeplechase she broke the school record by over 28 seconds and bettered her previous mark by over 40 seconds. One of the amazing things is that Janessa is our only female distance runner so she is training all by herself. You have to be a dedicated runner to train alone. Janessa works hard every day and that hard work is beginning to pay off. I think that her success during the cross country season gave her a good base to get off to a great start this spring. Janessa has always wanted to be a hurdler so now she has found an event that combines her talent as a distance runner and hurdling. With one of the top marks in the state she is a contender for a state title in the steeplechase."
Knight track fans are looking forward to seeing Janessa do
some great things on the track this season and next.

Soaring Record Breaker!
18 YEAR OLD POLE VAULT RECORD FALLS IN FIRST MEET
Freshman Dan Imlach has done what very few athletes have ever done. Dan broke an 18 year old school record in the pole vault in the first home meet of the season. Dan cleared the bar at 15' 8" breaking the previous mark by one inch that was set by Eric Pearcy back in 1987. "Dan is truly a dedicated athlete, he has a work ethic that reminds me of the athletes I  had in the 70's," says Head Coach Pete Giachetti. "He is one of the first ones to practice and the last one to leave. Dan's skills are not only in the pole vault but he can be found on the track running anything from the 100 to the 800, along with relays, and he does an outstanding job. Dan would make a great multi-event man but we would like to focus more on a state title in the pole vault at this time.  Dan's mark in the pole vault is the best mark in the state, for community colleges this year. He is the athlete that all coaches dream of having on their team. I have been coaching for 44 years and I can say that Dan is one of the best I have had on any of my teams. What I like about him the most is his passion for the sport."

LADY KNIGHT'S INSIDE PRESENCE
Ashley Schuler had a dream game against Lassen College that she won't soon forget. All she did against the Cougars was score 24 points and grab 10 rebounds. She was almost unstoppable scoring 12 points in each half as the Knights beat Lassen the #8 team in the state, 82-81. With the win the Lady Knights finished the first half of league play with a spotless 5-0 record. Ashley has been very consistent in GVC play averaging a double double. "She is playing with a lot of confidence," said Head Coach Jerry Brown. "She is a quality individual, she wants to get better and she works hard at her game. She has made herself into one of the top centers in the GVC. She is a pleasure to watch and coach!"

LADY KNIGHT'S COURT LEADER
If the Knights are to win big games against quality opponents, their best players must step up and come through in the clutch. The Lady Knights sophomore point guard, Tiffany Sand, did just that recently in back-to-back games against Butte College and College of the Siskiyous. Against Butte College, with the Lady Knights trailing by seven points with 4:30 left to play, Tiffany was at her best. Playing aggressive defense, running the offense, making free throws and most of all making clutch jump shots. All of her efforts combined when the Knights needed them the most. With 57 seconds left in regulation she hit a game tying three pointer. Tiffany also hit the only basket by either team in overtime. She finished the biggest game of her college career with a game high 18 points. Then to follow that outstanding performance she was unstoppable in the first half of a blowout win over COS. Tiffany had 17 points in the first half and finished with a game high of 19 in the lopsided win. "Tiffany is a great player," said Coach Brown. "She has outstanding skills and she plays smart. We needed her to step up her play this season and she has.
She is a fun player to watch, she has a very bright future!"

KNIGHT'S TALENTED FRESHMAN
The Knights have a player who is a tough matchup. With quickness of a guard and the size of a forward (6' 4"), Devon Hills is giving Knight opponents fits. He gave Butte College fits in the Knights 85-72 GVC win on January 15th. He finished the game with 29 points and two lightning quick
acrobatic dunks. Coach Fitzhugh has this to say about his talented freshman, "Devon has a tremendous upside, he has size, quickness and great skills. He is a tough matchup for someone to guard. He is as quick as anyone that I have coached here when he drives to the basket. He is maturing into one of our team leaders. We are expecting great things from Devon this year and next ."

The Knights have a "go to" player that they have been counting on to carry the load. Lately the Knights have been using this "go to" athlete for over 50% of their offense. In the last two football games Shane Van Zant has carried the ball 54 times for 335 yards, slightly more than 50% of the Knight's offense. In the Knight's big win over American River College this last week, Shane had 26 carries for 177 yards and a key 25 yard touchdown run. "Shane is one of our most dedicated players, he strives
to get everyone around him to work harder. He has a big motor that is always running at 110%," said Head Coach Craig Thompson. "Shane

KNIGHT'S LEADER & CAPTAIN
One big reason for the Knights success on the mat this year has been because of sophomore 174 pounder, Eddie Locke.
At the recently concluded Santa Rosa Tourney Eddie finished with an undefeated 6-0 record! Not only does Eddie sport a stellar 16-1 season record he also displays maturity and leadership off the mat as well. "Eddie has always had the skill, now as compared to 2002 he has the maturity to go with that skill," says Head Coach Max Burch. "He is a very aggressive wrestler, when the whistle blows he gets out and gets after it." The Knight
coaching staff and team think so much of Eddie that he was elected
team captain this season! Great job Eddie!!

This season might have been an off year for the Knight Men's cross country team but it wasn't an off year for Mitch McIntyre. All Mitch did at the recently concluded GVC Championships was beat the field and take the championship. What makes this more amazing is the fact that Mitch is only a freshman. Coach Pete Giachetti has this to say about his star runner, "Mitch is a great kid, a little on the quiet side but a great kid. His style reminds me of the great University of Oregon runner, Steve Prefontaine. Mitch likes to hang with the leaders and then use his kick to win in the last part of the race." There are several reasons why Mitch is having success this year. "He has a very high work ethic, he has some natural ability and he likes to push himself to the limit of his ability. Tough to Pass On!
Knight's Leader
With the Knights looking for their defense to shine this season, one player in particular is shining brighter than the rest. That player is sophomore free safety, Zach Catanese. Last game against Contra Costa College, Zach had a dream game with 3 interceptions in the Knight's 49-0 romp. "Zach is our team captain for a reason. He has a knack to get everyone around him to play better, he leads by example. Against Contra Costa, Zach brought all of his talents to the game, and he used them," said Head Coach Craig Thompson. "One reason that Zach is having a great season is because he is very competitive and driven to succeed. He has a great personality and his teammates respond to him." For his efforts in the Knight's first win of the season, two weeks ago vs. Solano College, Zach was nominated as the California State Defensive Player of the Week. Several major universities and colleges are looking to acquire Zach's talents for next season. He has
been contacted by Cal, BYU, USC and New Mexico State University.
One thing is certain, Zach has a bright future!
