Knight's Closer
With the Knight baseball team on a roll the coaching staff doesn't worry about who to use as a "closer." With a fast ball in the high 80's, the Knights have their go to guy, pitcher Steve Alverson. "If we need a game closed out, Steve is our guy. We know when we put him in that it's lights out for the other team," said assistant coach Shannon Hunt. "In league play he has 3 saves and is sporting a 1.63 ERA. He also has more strike outs than hits allowed!." His main out pitch is 12 to 6 rotating curve ball but he has a good fast ball in the upper 80's. "He has great mound presence and he just plays the game," said Head Coach Brad Rupert. Steve is also all set to finish his college baseball career in style. He has accepted a full ride scholarship to pitch for Louisiana Tech University next season.

ALWAYS AROUND THE PLATE
If a baseball team is ever going to get on a roll and start a win streak, it has to have consistent pitching. The Knights have been getting just that from freshman Berek Fasking from West Valley High School. "Berek is our most consistent pitcher, he gets us deep into every game he pitches," said Head Coach Brad Rupert. "He has pitched over 40 innings this season and he has only given up 3 walks! Our defense is on it toes when he pitches, he is always around the plate. He is the type of pitcher defenses like to play behind." Berek has pitched in eight games this season and he sports a 3-1 record and a 4.02 era. "Another reason Berek is having success is because he is very coachable," said pitching coach Marc Wanaka. With consistent pitching, like Berek is giving the Knights, they should be in the GVC race until the end.

KNIGHT OFFENSE LEADER
The Lady Knights are currently sporting the best record in school history. This year's Knights are the fastest team to reach 20 wins (They did it in 24 games) and they have the best winning percentage in school history @ .833 (20-4). One of the reasons for the Lady Knight's great start is because of the all around play of shortstop, freshman Christine Schuler from Central Valley High School. "I knew when I recruited her she was a good player, I just didn't know how good she was until I saw her play everyday. She is a very solid player and she rarely makes a mistake. At one point this season she got on base in 21 straight games! It seems like she is always on base. She is just a great player to have as a teammate," said Head Coach Sonny Stupek. Christine is also a tremendous hitter, she is hitting .571! Knight opponents are not looking forward to seeing Christine again next season.

GREAT APPROACH
After and 0-4 start to league play the Knights were in a hole. One reason that the hole has gotten a lot smaller is because of the play of sophomore, Jordan Prado from Anderson High School. The Knights have rebounded and now sport a five game winning streak
and a 5-4 GVC record. Jordan is one of the reasons for the turn around. Because of an injury Coach Rupert asked his outstanding outfielder to make a position change to shortstop. Jordan made the change without hesitation and it has paid off for the Knights. He had been at shortstop for eight games and has played errorless ball. The change has not affected his hitting either, he is still red hot. Jordan is leading the team in hitting (.418!), RBI's with 16 and hits with 33 in 20 games. "I love his approach to the game, he plays hard and he plays smart," said Head Coach Brad Rupert. "He is our team leader,
he just comes to play! He has a bright future."

Big Sky Catch!
BIG SKY PLAYER & BIG KNIGHT PERFORMER
One reason the Lady Knights are on a roll (20-4, 10-0 GVC & ranked 7th in the state!) is because of the play of freshman, Ashley Thatcher from Great Falls, MT. In the Lady Knight's last doubleheader sweep over College of the Redwoods, Ashley almost single handedly cut down the Corsairs. In game one against Redwoods Ashley pitched a complete game shut out,
allowed only two hits and she struck out ten Corsairs. She also accounted for the only Knight run with a homerun in the 1-0 win. Then in game two she almost repeated her game one feat. She again pitched a complete game shut out and she again hit a homerun, this time in a 5-0 Knight win. "She has some rare qualities," says Head Coach Sonny Stupek. "She is just a tremendous athlete to have as your teammate. She is a really good person and a very hard worker, she almost lives in the weight room. One reason she is a great pitcher is because of some good "genes." Her Dad was a good athlete and she has two brothers who are also very athletic. One specific trait she has that helps her is that she has big hands which helps her grip the ball." Ashley throws three pitches, a rise ball, change up and screwball. "She has a very bright future ahead of her, I am glad that we have her for two years, she will be a very good catch for
some four year program."

One thing is certain, College of the Redwoods would be happy never to see Ashley again!

One reason the Lady Knights are on a roll (15-5, 7-2 GVC) is because of the play of sophomore, Lindsay Cross from Weaverville. In the Lady Knight's last big win over College of the Siskiyous, Lindsay was her usually steady self. All she did was scored 12 points and pull down 15 rebounds! "Lindsay is having a great year, in league play alone she has had two double doubles," said Head Coach Jerry Brown. "Game in and game out Lindsay is our best rebounder. She works hard to get into position and it is paying off for us. The difference in her play this season compared to last season is that this year she is playing with confidence. She believes that she is a good player and she is!" Knight fans are certainly glad about Lindsay's new found confidence.

CAN SHOOT THREES
The Knights have finally hit their stride. Shasta basketball fans can point to several reasons why the Knights have won 3 out of their last 4 games. One of the biggest reasons might be the play of the Knight's best shooter, sophomore guard Brian Erickson from Orland. In the Knight's big win over conference leader College of the Siskiyous, Brian scored 18 points. The Knight's needed every one of those 18 points in their 86-85 win. A Brandon Baker steal (with 12 seconds left in the game) set the stage for Brian's game winning tip-in (with 4 seconds left in the game). "Brian is playing with the confidence that he lacked last season," said Head Coach Kele Fitzhugh
. "He has been our most consistent outside scorer, especially in league play." Brian is averaging a team high of almost 14 points a game in GVC play. He has had high games of 21, 20, 18 & 18 points in league play!
If Brian continues his high level of play the Knights will certainly make things miserable for their remaining GVC foes.

MULTIPLE THREAT!
The Lady Knights have multiple offensive weapons that their opponents must try to stop. Their best long range weapon this year is guard/forward Lindsie Lefort from Shasta High School. Lately Lindsie has been on a tear nailing three pointers as easily as lay ups. In the Lady Knight's big overtime win in Weed against College of the Siskiyous, she ended the game with 8 three pointers and a team high of 26 points. In an earlier win this year against Chabot, Lindsie knocked down 7 threes and had a career high of 33 points! "It is an advantage for Lindsie being almost six feet tall, that helps her to shoot over smaller defenders. Not only is she our best three point threat she also does a nice job rebounding. She is one of the fiercest competitors and hardest workers that has ever played for me, she loves to compete! ," said Head Coach Jerry Brown. "She will definitely play at the next level." Certified Athletic Trainer Mike Davis had this to say about the Lady Knight's sharp shooter, "Lindsie lives the game, this year she is playing more relaxed and she looks like she is having fun,
she is fun to watch!"

IMMEDIATE INFLUENCE
One reason the Lady Knights are advancing to the second round of the state volleyball championships is because of the play of Katie Wilson. In the Lady Knights first round match against American River College, the Knights had lost game one and were playing poorly in game two, trailing 11-19. The Lady Knights needed a spark, that spark turned out to be Katie Wilson. Coach Kelly Brazil thought some height and defense might help the Knights. She looked to the bench and inserted Katie into the match. Katie made the most of her opportunity and responded with a key block on the very next point. The tide of the match changed on Coach Brazil's substitution. Katie made several more blocks and added some huge kills as the Lady Knights followed her lead and won game two in thrilling fashion, 33-31. With Katie staying in the lineup the Lady Knights continued to pick up the intensity and won the match in four games, 23-30, 33-31, 30-25 & 30-20. All told, Katie ended the match with 9 blocks and 5 kills all of which helped to keep the Knights in command. "Katie's energy and outstanding play were key for us. Until she went into the match we were playing without the needed intensity. She immediately played great defense and gave us a huge lift," said Head Coach Kelly Brazil. "Katie got her opportunity and she certainly made the most of it. I am very proud of her. With her in the lineup we have another weapon to go to,
other teams will have to account for her."

DYNAMIC JUMP SERVE
It takes a little luck and great athletes to win a championship. The Lady Knight volleyball program has certainly had its share of both for the last 28 seasons and 23 championships. One reason the Knights were able to repeat as champions this season was because of the outstanding play of Marissa Kraft. Marissa played her best game of the season against Butte College in the Knight's league finale. Marissa ended up tied for the team high in kills with 13. Her patented jump serve was almost unstoppable. She helped put the Roadrunners out of their misery by spiking the last three points of the match. "
Marissa has had a key role in the success that our volleyball team has enjoyed this season. She has solid all-around skills and is very coachable. Her jump-serve is very dynamic and was instrumental in our final win against Butte College. Marissa is also a very strong threat offensively and is able to hit the ball anywhere on the court. I am looking forward to watching her play next season. She is a great athlete and person," said Head Coach Kelly Brazil. Rare Qualities!
GREAT ABILITY & GREAT HEART
"Best catch I've ever seen in all my years here," said Knights defensive coordinator Matt Diskin after a game. "And I've been here for 12 years." The catch that Coach Diskin is taking about came in the American River College game November 8, 2003. With the Knights down 10-7 and two minutes left in the first half, the Knights had the ball on the American River 20-yard line facing a second-and-14. Quarterback Scott Wingert lofted a pass in the end zone toward Clapsaddle. The sophomore outraced one defender all the way to the back of the end zone, then stopped right before going out of bounds and caught the ball in the crook of his left arm, one handed— all this while a Beavers safety was draped all over him. No pass interference call necessary, spectacular catch and a touchdown for the Knights! In a 28-23 loss to Yuba the week before, Clapsaddle was honored as one of the California Community College players of the week after catching nine passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns. For the season, he leads the Knights with 28 catches for 402 yards and three scores. "I wish we had 75 guys who had the courage and the desire that KC has. We would be winning all of our games!," said Head Coach Craig Thompson. "KC is just a great football player with a huge heart! He is the type of player that other players follow and look up too. He has done more than we have asked him to do. He plays at 110% every down, whether it's at wide receiver or as a kick returner. The next school that he plays for will be extremely fortunate in the fact that they will be getting a great athlete and an outstanding person!"

Even though the Knight soccer team has had a disappointing start to their season they have been able to count on one thing, their defense. No matter what sport you are in, when you play great defense you have a chance to win. Leading the Knight defense this season on the soccer field for the Knights is sophomore keeper, Mark Lewis. After getting injured his freshman season Mark has fought back to have a stellar start to his sophomore campaign. Last week Mark had a great game against a ranked American River College team. The Knights in five seasons of soccer had never beaten ARC. All that changed when Mark and his teammates stopped all the shots that the Beavers could shoot at them in a 1-0 Knight win. "Mark was unbelievable against American River," said Head Coach Rich Bourne. "He was in perfect position all game long. He played a perfect game, it was just a great win for us. If the Lady Knight volleyball team is going to reload and repeat this season, they will need a "go to" player. The Lady Knights have found their "go to" player in sophomore, Bubbles Lee. Last season Bubbles helped lead the Knights to a GVC title and in the process was named to the All-GVC team as an outside hitter. This season Coach Brazil was hoping that Bubbles would step up her game even higher and be a "go to" player and a leader on the court. So far this young season Bubbles has done just that. In the San Jose City College Tourney this past weekend, Bubbles led the Knights to the tourney title and in the process was named MVP of the tournament. The Knights are again considered to be the team to beat in the race for the GVC crown. With Bubbles Lee and her teammates peaking just before league play, the Lady Knights are once again in the drivers seat. "Bubbles is having a great year, so far. He is also making the most out of his opportunity. Against the always tough, Sacramento City College Panthers, T.J. had an outstanding game rushing for 183 yards in 23 carries. The main reason that the Knights were able to build a 32-6 lead and win the game 41-39 was the running of T.J. Smith. All T.J. did was break off runs of 62 yards and one of 44 yards. The 62 yarder set up a Beau McCoy one yard plunge and T.J. scored on his 44 yard effort. If the Knights are going to be considered a good team this season the returning sophomores will have to step up their play and play like veterans. T.J. Smith is certainly doing his part!
After only 3 games T.J. is just short of 400 yards rushing for the season.

Minnesota??
Talk about a long way from home! Bailey Scott made it to Redding by way of Minnesota! "I had heard how beautiful the north state is and I wanted to see for myself." Well, Knight volleyball fans are glad she did. This past weekend in Sacramento the Lady Knights took a third place in an American River College volleyball tournament that featured 20 teams. For her outstanding play Bailey was named to the All-Tourney Team. The Lady Knight volleyball program tries to do one thing every season, repeat as champs. Repeat as champions is one thing the Lady Knights have done over the last 27 years, for a total of 22 championships! So far Coach Brazil has been impressed with the play of her setter, "Bailey's height gives us another dimension at the net. She is a fast learner as well. I have been impressed with her ability to adjust to the speed of the college game. She is also in great shape. We played 11 games last Saturday and help play did not drop off at all." If the Knights are going to repeat again this season they will need outstanding play from their setter. So far, Bailey is doing just what the Knights need her to do!

KNIGHT PROFILE - Punter/Kicker - David Dittman
Pressure 47 Yard Kick
Once reason the Knight football team is off to a fast start is because of the play of their special teams. One player that is helping to make the Knights "Special," is punter/kicker David Dittman from Shasta High School. In the Knight's first three games David has consistently got off some great punts helping to keep the Knight opponents at bay. He is averaging over 43 yards per punt during the first three Knight victories. But last game, against Sac City in a 41-39 Knight win, David made a kick that will forever be in Knight lore. With the score in favor of Sac City, 39-38, and only 1:32 left in the game David was asked by Head Coach Craig Thompson to attempt a 47 yard field goal on fourth and 12. The reason David was asked to make the attempt was the fact that Brett Bergstrom, the Knights regular place kicker had sustained a concussion on the previous series.
The situation was set, Knights on the Sac City 29 yard line, fourth and 12 to go, back-up place kicker ready, late in a big game, a long distance of 47 yards, game on the line and a huge Hall of Fame crowd on their feet. The line held out the Sac City rush, the snap from center Gino D'Aprile was perfect, the placement of the ball by holder Joe Fenske was also perfect and the kick by David was even better! The large roar of the crowd four seconds after the snap let the Sac City sideline know that the ball had indeed sailed through the uprights. The Knights were back in the lead for good. With the Sac City offense running 13 plays in the last 1:32 of the game and marching to the Shasta 10 yard line the Knights still needed a Ben Baker field goal block with 15 seconds left to secure the win and cement "The Kick" into the record books. Final score in favor of the Knights,
41-39.
" When I asked David if he could make the kick, it was his confident answer and focused look that let me know we were making the right decision," said Head Coach Craig Thompson. "David has been very consistent for us the last two seasons, he has always come through under pressure. He should have several schools looking at him this season."

KNIGHT PROFILE - Wide Receiver - Joe Irelan
Not Your Ordinary Joe
Joe had a freshman season like very few others have had in the history of Shasta College athletics. All he did last season was catch 67 passes for 1,462 yards and 14 touchdowns, all school records! For his outstanding season last year Joe was named to the Junior College All American football team. This season Joe is certain to draw double coverage on every down. Against College of the Redwoods last week, a 46-14 Knight's blowout, Joe had his usual game. He led the team in rushing with 134 yards on the ground, including a 90 run on a sweep for a touchdown, and caught 5 passes for 85 more yards through the air. Because Joe started playing college athletics 2 years after becoming a full time student, Joe is looking to transfer to a Division II school after this season. "I have a friend who is a quarterback at Grand Valley State University in Michigan. They want to see film on me so it looks promising," said Joe. I think that Knight football fans might think that Grand Valley State University would be lucky to be able to land a football player and person of Joe's ability and character!
