Perfect Game Clausen!
DAWN K's NINE COUGARS-KNIGHTS SWEEP
(4/9/03-Shasta College) In the first game of a double header here Wednesday, Knight pitcher Dawn Clausen threw a perfect game at the Lassen Cougars. Dawn faced the minimum 15 batters in her 8 run rule shortened 5 inning game. She also struck out nine Cougars. Dawn struck out the side in the second inning to take control of the game. The Lady Knights won going away, 9-0. Dawn might want to take Michelle Kelley out to dinner tonight to thank her for her help. Michelle made the play of the game in the top of the fifth inning making a diving catch to prevent a hit. Carrie Syphers led the Knight attack going 2 for 2 with a walk and 3 runs scored. Nicole Strickland added a double and 2 RBIs. Chrissy Joseph was 2 for 2 with a sacrifice bunt and Monique Kelley went 2-for-2 for Shasta (10-6 Golden Valley Conference, 27-11). Tournament Knights
BEAT DEFENDING STATE CHAMPS, AGAIN
(4/4-5/03-San Jose) The Lady Knights are staying true to form. They play their best softball on the road in tournaments. They again had a good weekend going 3-1 in the West Valley Tournament. The Lady Knights split their first two games beating the defending state champions, West Valley, 6-5 before losing to Sacramento City College 3-1. In their win over West Valley, Monique Kelley hit a two-out triple and Meghan Roath followed with an RBI single to give the Knights the lead in the last inning. In game two the Knights Erin Case took the loss while Chrissy Joseph went 2 for 3. Erin Zilch struck out seven and gave up just 2 hits in a 7-0 shutout of West Hills on Sunday. Nicole Strickland was 3 for 3 with a two run triple in the second inning for the 25-11 Knights. Michelle Kelley also had a triple in the win.
No Bats in Weed
HAVE TO DO IT IN THE PLAYOFFS
(3/29/03-Weed) The Lady Knights got to Weed for an important double header without an valuable weapon, their bats. The Lady Knights lost game one 4-0 and game two 4-3. With the loses the Knights are now 6-6 in the GVC race but more importantly they are 4 games behind conference leaders COS. The Knights' Michelle Kelley answered a COS homerun with a two-run blast in the sixth inning of the second game, however, it wasn't enough to catch Siskiyous and prevent being swept.
"Mo" Kelley Leads Knights
3RD PLACE FINISH IN FRESNO TOURNEY
(3/23/03-Fresno) The Knights (20-8, GVC 6-4)road some good pitching and the hot bat of Monique Kelley to a third place finish at the Fresno City College "Bash at Buchanan." For the tourney the Knights finished 4-1 overall. The Knights started pool play with a 5-1 win over Victor Valley. Winning pitcher for the Knights in game one was Dawn Clausen. Those three wins advanced the Knights to the Gold division for Sundays play. First up for the Knights on Sunday was Reddley. In their closest game of the tourney the Knights edged Reedley 5-4. In the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs and the Lady Knights down by 2 runs Monique tied the game up with a clutch double. In a Hole
TOO MANY ERRORS & TOO MANY WALKS
(3/12/03-Shasta College-Article by Jeffrey Jen, Redding Record Searchlight Newspaper) It has been at least 17 years since the College of the Siskiyous softball team has swept its Shasta counterpart. Knights coach Sunny Stupek is wishing it will be at least another 17 years before his team plays as poorly as it did in losing to the Eagles 8-6 and 6-4 at the Shasta softball field on Wednesday. Siskiyous entered the doubleheader tied with Shasta and Redwoods atop the Golden Valley Conference with 5-1 records. The Eagles (7-1 GVC, 14-6) left knowing they still had at least a share of the lead and a two-game cushion on the Knights. "We were just horrible," Stupek said. "You can't have as many errors and walks as we had and expect to win. Give Siskiyous credit. They played well and got the hits when they had to." The first game wasn't sound for either team, but the Eagles came out on top thanks to seven errors by Shasta (5-3 GVC, 15-6) and seven walks by all-state pitcher Erin Zilch. "We obviously didn't play as well as we could have," Knights second baseman Michelle Kelley said. "We had way too many errors today. I don't think anybody on the team had a good day." The same couldn't be said for Siskiyous, which proved resilient despite blowing big leads in each game. In the first game, the Eagles took a 6-1 lead in the top of the fourth, only to see Shasta roar back with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Correy Hansen and Bubbles Lee each had key doubles in the inning for the Knights. However, Siskiyous came back in the top of the seventh. In the second game, three more errors again plagued Shasta. The Knights had two outs in the top of the third, but a low throw for an error eventually led to a four-run inning for the Eagles. Shasta responded in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded and two outs, Hansen hit a deep fly ball to left which Miller dropped, cutting the Siskiyous lead to 4-3. Monique Kelley then tied the game with an RBI single. But another Shasta error to lead of the sixth put Siskiyous back in business. "It was a gutsy day for us," Eagles coach Doug Eastman said. "We had big leads twice and gave them up. But we persevered. In this league, we're evenly matched so the team who makes the least errors will win." On Wednesday that was Siskiyous, and for the first time in a long while, the Eagles walked away from a meeting with the Knights looking like the better team.
Big Time Comeback!
KELLEY & JOSEPH FUEL COMEBACK/SWEEP
(3/8/03-Quincy) Chrissy Joseph and Michelle Kelley each had two-run singles in the seventh inning of the second game as the Knights came from behind to sweep Feather River. The Knights entered the 7th inning trailing 3-1. The four runs gave the Knights a one run cushion that they would need. Feather River scored one run in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 5-4 final. Hitting stars were Carrie Syphers (2x4), Michelle Kelley (2x4 with 3 RBI's) and Chrissy Joseph (1x3 with 2 RBI's). Shasta (5-1 GVC, 14-4) won the first game, 6-1, behind pitcher Erin Zilch (4-0). Tracy Eleck, Joseph, Kelley and Nicole Strickland led the offensive attack with two hits each. Knight pitching limited FRC to only 5 hits in the double header sweep.
Knights Blowup Lassen
10 INNINGS AND 49 RUNS
(3/5/03-Susanville) The Shasta College softball team took out whatever frustrations it had against host Lassen on Wednesday. The Knights were disappointed to get a split against Redwoods over the weekend to open Golden Valley Conference play. Against Lassen, Shasta became an offensive juggernaut in winning the first game 31-0 and the second game 18-0. Dawn Clausen pitched the Knights to a win in the opener. Jenny Finchum and Correy Hansen led the attack, each had four hits. Finchum drove in four runs, while Hansen drove in three as did Michelle Kelley, who was 3-for-6. Carrie Syphers also was 3x6 and Suzanne Parr was a perfect 3x3. The Knights ended the game with 26 hits while Lassen helped the Knights cause with 8 errors. In the second game, which also lasted the minimum of five innings, Erin Zilch tossed a one-hit shutout in the 18-0 Knights victory. Correy Hansen and Carrie Syphers each went 3x5. Jenny Finchum (2x4 & 2B), Bubbles Lee (2x3 & 3B) and Kari Parr (2x3) all drove in two runs for Shasta (3-1 GVC, 12-4). The Knights ended the day with 49 runs on 41 hits!
Redwoods Split
TWO ONE RUN GAMES
(3/1/03-Shasta College) The Shasta College softball team defeated College of the Redwoods 4-3 to open its Golden Valley Conference season on Saturday. Tracy Eleck, a freshman shortstop, hit a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the seventh to provide the winning run. Nicole Adair (4-1) got the win. But Redwoods came back to beat the Knights 5-4 in eight innings in the second game. Shasta (1-1 GVC, 10-4) blew an early 3-0 lead. Chrissy Joseph and Nicole Strickland each had three hits, while Eleck went 2-for-3 and Correy Hansen went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Knights.
Zilch's No-Hit 2003 Debut
ERIN'S FIRST GAME BACK AFTER SURGERY
(2/25/03-Shasta College) The Shasta College Lady Knights softball team just got better. The Knights have had a good preseason going 9-3 without their pitching ace, sophomore Erin Zilch. Erin was a 22 game winner as a freshman and she made her 2003 debut in style, no-hit style! In her first game back from shoulder surgery, Erin threw a no-hitter for the Shasta College softball team as it blew out Yuba City 11-0 on Tuesday at Shasta College. Zilch had plenty of support on offense as Jenny Finchum launched a second-inning home run over the left-center field wall. That was followed by Michelle Kelley's solo homer in the third. Kelley finished 3-for-3 with a home run, a triple and a pair of RBIs. Tracy Eleck also had a big day for the Knights, going 3-for-3 with a triple, a double and an RBI.
Knights Second at Modesto
SHUT OUT STATE CHAMPS
(2/23/03-Modesto) The Shasta College softball team placed second at the Merced Invitational Sunday after falling 4-3 to host Merced College in the championship game. The Knights (8-3) trailed 3-1 after three innings but rallied in the fourth inning when Chrissy Joseph and Suzanne Parr drove in runs to tie the game 3-3. But Merced scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning. Joseph went 2-for-4 in the loss, and Tracy Eleck went 2-for-3. Shasta defeated Ohlone 6-2 in the semifinals. Pitcher Erin Case (3-1) allowed just four hits for the win. Correy Hansen went 2-for-3 with a home run. Bubbles Lee went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Parr went 2-for-2 with two RBIs. On Saturday won all three of their games in pool play. The Lady Knights started out with a 3-2 win over Fresno City College Sue Parr drove in Correy Hansen in the top of the eight for the win. Both Parr and Monique Kelley were 1-2 and Nicole Adair (3-0) was credited with the win. Game two was a little easier with a 7-3 over Taft. Carrie Syphers went 3-3 with 3 runs scored and Michelle Kelley was 1-2 with and RBI. Dawn Clausen got the win and Nicole Adair got her first save of the season. Game three saw the Knights face off with the defending state champs, West Valley College. Good pitching will beat good hitting any time and that is exactly what happened. The Knights with great pitching from Erin Case beat the defending champs 4-0. Erin had a nice Saturday pitching two shut outs. Monique Kelley was 2-3 with 2 RBI's and she scored 2 runs. Monique hit a two run home run in the fourth inning. Twin sister Michelle was 3-3 with two runs scored.
Win One Lose One
CORREY HANSON WITH 3 HITS IN THE WIN
(2/8/03-Modesto) The Lady Knights got their season underway with 1-1 record after playing two games in Modesto on Saturday. The Knights had trouble scoring runs in their opener losing 6-1 to the College of San Mateo. Monique Kelley drove in Shasta's lone run. In game two the Knights knocked off Modesto College 12-7. Correy Hanson was 3-4 with a triple and an RBI. Chrissy Joseph was 2-4 with 2 RBI's for Shasta 1-1 on the season.
