Meredith Rides to Cal
GREATEST SHASTA FEMALE TRACKSTER EVER?
(Article by Jeffery Jen Record Redding Record Searchlight)
(6/25/02-Redding) "I just felt that was the place for me. It was a nice campus and not too far from home. And there were about four other heptathletes on the team, so I won't be training alone," said the Knight's, Brooke Meredith.
Back in January, Brooke Meredith believed her track and field days were numbered. But after a spectacular 2002 season at Shasta College that ended with state junior college titles in the heptathlon and the women's 400-meter hurdles, Meredith isn't running from the sport. Earlier this month, Meredith accepted a full-ride scholarship to UC-Berkeley and its track and field program. After considering Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, Cal State Northridge and University of Jacksonville among others, Meredith settled on Cal. Her decision completed a whirlwind four months during which Meredith went from virtual unknown in recruiting circles to being hotly pursued by several Division I schools. There was a time when Meredith wasn't really into track. At West Valley High School, she was more into softball. It was her junior year when she started concentrating on track and field. Meredith attended Simpson College for a semester before missing the competition of the sport prompted her to transfer to Shasta College in time for the 2001 season. She had a good freshman season as a long jumper and sprinter, but Shasta College coach Chris Baptista felt she would get more attention from four-year schools as a heptathlete. An athlete competes in seven different events in the heptathlon and earns points in each event based on her finish. The better the performance, the more points she accrues. In her first year competing in the heptathlon, Meredith broke the Shasta College record three times in addition to school marks in the 200, long jump and 400 hurdles. Meredith tallied an impressive 5,182 points at the state JC track and field championships to win the state title, beating her nearest competitor by more than 800 points. "I was really happy with what I did," Meredith said. "I was just aiming for 5,000, but things worked out." After completing the heptathlon in two days at the state meet, Meredith also won the state 400 hurdles title in another school record (1:00.11) and finished second in the long jump. Her coach was in awe. "It's the most outstanding performance I've ever been associated with," Baptista said. "The heptathlon is a tough event. There are lots of good athletes who can't do it because they just can't put it all together and do good in all the events. Her desire to excel is what sets her apart." Meredith hopes to get up to 5,700 points and make the NCAA championships by the time her Cal career is over. But the coaches at Cal are already thinking of having her train and compete on an even higher level — the Olympics? — after that. "I never thought I could make it to that level," Meredith said. "It would be a dream if I could."
Brooke Finishes in Style!
BREAKS TWO MORE SCHOOL RECORDS
(5/18/02-Santa Barbara)
Brooke Meredith seems intent on leaving a long lasting legacy at Shasta College. The multiple school record holder beat her previous mark in the heptathlon by more than 300 points Saturday at the California Community College track and field championships. Brooke completed the two-day event with a score of 5,182, beating her previous record of 4,867 and topping the second-place finisher by a whopping 820 points. In addition, Meredith finished first in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1.00.11 seconds, which beats her previous record of 1.01.85. Meredith also took second in the long jump (19 feet, 2¼ inches). In her Shasta College career, Brooke has to be known as the record breaker. (Link to school records) At one time she held 5 different school records. Meredith, May & Billing Lead

JUSTIN MAY NAMED CONFERENCE MVP
(4/26 & 27/02-Oroville) Jeff Billing and Brooke Meredith once again had big days at the Golden Valley Conference track and field championships on Saturday. Also having a huge day was Knight, Justin May. All Justin did was win the 110m hurdles, 400 hurdles and the high jump. He also took a second in the long jump and a third in the triple jump. Justin was named league MVP for his efforts. Once again, the Shasta women won the GVC team title, but the men finished second to host Butte. Despite a strong head wind, Jeff Billing repeated as the GVC champion in the men's 100 meters, the 200 and the long jump and was part of the Knights' first-place 400 and 1,600 relay teams. The sophomore won the 100 in a slow 11.19 seconds before beating out the College of the Siskiyous' Elijah Markstrom by four-hundredths of a second in the 200 with a 22.55. "That wind definitely made it tough to run today," Billing said. "With that much wind, it's a whole different ball game running. But I'm pleased with winning all my events. I just wished we could have won the team title. "Butte edged out Shasta 121-114 in the men's standings while Siskiyous, expected to be a contender, finished a distant third with 40. The difference was the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase. "There were six Butte runners in that race and no one else," Shasta coach Chris Baptista said. "That one event gave them 16 points and the conference title, it turns out." A year after winning four events, Meredith won five events this time around and placed second in the shot put. The sophomore set another school record, her fifth of the season, in the 400 hurdles. Her time of 1:03.81 eclipsed Lisa Littrell's 1986 mark of 1:04.59. Meredith also won the long jump, triple jump and the 100 hurdles. She took the javelin with a personal-best throw of 127 feet, one inch. "I was nervous before the 400 hurdles," Meredith said. "I've never run that event before so I wasn't sure what to expect, but I still managed to get the school record." For here outstanding efforts Brooke was named G.V.C. M.V.P. Behind Meredith and double-winners Aleah Howington (800 and 1,500) and Carie Knox (100 and 200), the Shasta women ran away with its second straight GVC title, scoring 139 points. Butte was second with 39, Lassen third at 38 and Siskiyous fourth with 28. Rosanna Hall won the 5,000 and 10,000 for Siskiyous. For the Shasta men, Justin May was a triple-winner with a season-best 6-9 in the high jump. He won both the 110 and 400 hurdles. A pair of Shasta runners ended up with photo finishes. Dan Sweet won the 5,000 in 16:38.00 by edging Butte's Ian Craig at the line. Craig finished 16:38.01. Jesse Minor, who had already won the 1,500, finished second in the 800, falling by one-hundredth of a second, 2:05.34 to 2:05.35.
