Roberts Third in Steeple
ASHLEY BRITTON FOURTH IN HJ
(Riverside-5-16-08) Maggie Roberts took third in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase as the Shasta College women's team finished 10th in the team standings Saturday at the California Junior College Track and Field Championships in Cerritos. Roberts finished in 11 minutes, 29.32 seconds, while teammate Brittany Williams was eighth in 12:21. Roberts also was eighth in the 5,000 at 19:36.28. The Knights' Ashley Britton took fourth in the high jump at 5 feet, 3 inches. Teammate Lorien Patmore was eighth at 5-1. Britton also was seventh in the triple jump (35-10) and eighth in the long jump (17-3).
Lohse Close, Takes Second
GOOD THROW HITS OFFICIAL
(Riverside-5/15/08) The College of the Siskiyous is bringing home a track and field state champion, while Shasta College's Holly Lohse can only wonder "what if." The Eagles' Ashley Geer won the women's javelin Friday at the JC Track and Field finals in Riverside with a throw of 139 feet, 7 inches. the Knights' Amanda Potts was 12th (97). Lohse, meanwhile, took second in the women's discus with a school record of 146-9, falling five inches short of Cerritos' Ashley Whitney. However, one of Lohse's throws -- which coach Aaron Junta said appeared to be in the 148-149 range -- hit an official. The Knights protested, claiming the throw should be estimated. The protest was denied and Lohse was given an extra throw. "She was frustrated after that," Junta said. Andrew Milne took eighth in the 10,000 meters for Shasta in a time of 35 minutes, 12 seconds. Keith Welch was 12th in the men's javelin (166).

Siskiyous' Joshua Sanford was eighth (140-6) and Seth Stroing was 11th in the hammer at 133-10.
Ironman Milne Leads Knights
LADY KNIGHTS TAKE TITLE, MEN SECOND
(Shasta College-4/25/08-Jeffrey Jen) Andrew Milne called it "the ironman day." True. The Shasta College sophomore ran the 3,000-meter steeplechase race, the 1,500-meter, the 800, the 5,000 and to top it off, the high jump. But when it comes to the Golden Valley Conference track and field championships, held at Shasta on Friday, the athletes get stretched a bit, to help accumulate team points. Ashley Britton went through seven events -- winning four individual ones and two relays -- to help lead the Knights to the women's title by a comfortable margin. Shasta rolled up 143 points, while Yuba had 88, Butte 43 and Siskiyous 16. But it was the men's team standings that went to the wire, with Butte coming on with a late kick to overtake Shasta and grab the GVC crown with 131 points to the Knights' 126. Siskiyous had 30 points and Yuba 17. "I thought we had a chance to win it," Knights head track coach Aaron Junta said. "We didn't score as well as I hoped in some events, but we also had guys come up with big performances. You always hate to lose, but I'm real proud of how well our guys competed." Butte had a few too many bodies when points are scored for each participant. A win is worth six points, second is four followed by three for third place, two for fourth and one for fifth. The Roadrunners kept piling on points with fourth- and fifth-place finishes. Still, Shasta made Butte head track coach Robby Snelling, a Burney High School product, sweat. The Knights' Milne did his part, winning all the distance events from the steeplechase in 10 minutes, 38.54 seconds, through the 800 (2:08.08), 1,500 (4:24.62) and finally the 5,000 (16:58.41). In the last race, he still had enough juice to use a strong final 500 meters to overtake Butte's Angel Ventura (17:12.98) for the win. He added a fifth-place finish in the high jump. "Just trying to help my team," said Milne, who attended Redding Adventist. "They had a lot more athletes than us. We competed hard against that, though." There were some big performances that helped Shasta close the gap on Butte. Nick Evans took second in the 200 (22.46) behind Yuba's Gurvinder Bajwa (22.33), beating a slew of Roadrunners in the process. Evans added a third in the 400 in 50.07. Caleb Fritsch and Matt Cray went 1-2 in the pole vault. Fritsch went 12-9 and Cray 12-3. Alex Rankin took second in the high jump, fourth in the long jump (20-0) and third in the triple jump (44-2½). Four different Knights won the throwing events. Eric Wright won in the shot put (43-7), Adam Doelker took the discus (132-9), Seth Stroing the hammer throw (148-1) and Keaton Welch won the javelin (179-1). The biggest surprise came in the 400 hurdles where Shasta's Jake Kyle upset Butte's Clayton LaBarge. Kyle outsprinted LaBarge in the final 50 meters, winning in 58.43 to LaBarge's 58.89. There was no such tight battle among the women. Shasta had too much in the field events led by Britton who won the 800 (2:27.59), the triple jump (36-6½), the long jump (16-11½) and the high jump (5-0). The Trinity product, who already has signed a letter of intent to Chico State, also helped Shasta roll in the two relays. She already has qualified for the heptathlon, but a change of plans may in store. "I don't know if I'll compete," Britton said. "I'm thinking about trying to get the spring back in my legs for the triple jump. That's probably my best event." Holly Lohse, a freshman, threw 143-4 to win the discus and set a personal record by 11 feet. She also won the hammer (146-5) and took second in the shot put (38-5½). Amanda Potts won three events in the 400 hurdles (1:08.68), the pole vault (10-0) and the javelin (108-11), while Maggie Roberts took two in the steeplechase (12:09.51) and the 10,000 (41:15.96). Roberts & Williams Go 1-2
ANDREW MILNE GVC CHAMP
(Shasta College-4/19/08) Megan Roberts and Brittany Williams went 1-2 for Shasta College in the women's 10,000-meter race at its own Shasta Invitational on Saturday. Roberts won in a time of 41 minutes, 15 seconds, while Williams crossed the finish line at 42:02. Because of its length, the race was also considered part of the Golden Valley Conference championships, which is to be held Friday at Shasta College. In the men's 10,000, Andrew Milne finished second overall in 35:00, but the winner wasn't from a GVC school, thus making him the conference champion as well. The invite featured 10 teams in a non-scoring format, including some four-year schools. Shasta's Ashley Britton won the high jump on Saturday with a leap of 5 feet, 2 inches. She also was third in the triple jump (34-4). Lorien Patmore finished third in the 400 hurdles (1:11.56) and the high jump (5-0). Holly Lohse won the discus (131-2) and added third-place finishes in the shot put (36-7) and the hammer throw (128-8). For the Shasta men, Nick Evans took second in both the 200 (23.17) and the 400 (50.33). Caleb Fritsch was sixth in the pole vault (12-0), while Alex Rankin took sixth in both the long jump (20-7) and the triple jump (43-2). Keaton Welch took seventh in the javelin (165-5).

(Hayward-2/23/08) The Shasta College women's track and field team finished second out of five teams at a NorCal rotational meet at Chabot College on Friday. The Knights racked up 160 points, behind DeAnza (207.5) but ahead of Chabot (112.5), Yuba (11) and Marin (7). Lorien Patmore of Shasta won the women's 800 meters in 2 minutes, 40.01 seconds. Ashley Britton took first in the high jump (5-2) and the triple jump (34-7). Holly Lohse won the shot put (33-7), discus (111-6) and hammer throw (87-3). Knights to Challenge
LADY KNIGHTS WIN, MEN SECOND - MEET RESULTS
(Shasta College-2/15/08-Jeffrey Jen) In recent years, there haven't been too many home track and field meets held at Shasta College. That is something that first-year Knights coach Aaron Junta hopes to change. To that effect, Shasta College hosted a six-school rotational meet Friday, the first of three possbile home meets this year. The rotational, which included Butte, Siskiyous, Yuba, Sierra and San Joaquin Delta, was the first meet of the season for the Knights and provided an early season preview. The Shasta women easily outpaced the field in collecting 179 points, well ahead of Butte (74), Sierra (70) and Siskiyous (36). The Shasta men were edged by Butte 153-149 followed by Delta (66), Siskiyous (61) and Yuba (54). Overall, things went well for the Knights. "We have some athletes who are still in basketball and some more who are out with injuries," Junta said. "But, we're doing well on the women's side in spite of that." Junta has goals for his first season. He wants the men to challenge for a Golden Valley Conference team title, so there is some work to be done to catch Butte. Junta thinks the women's team has a shot at being in the mix for a Top 3 finish in Northern California by the end of the season. "We're winning here at less than full strength and 20 percent of the NorCal teams are here," Junta said. "About the only weakness we have is that we don't have the sprinters in the 100 or 200. Other than that, we have everything else." The women are led by sophomore Ashley Britton, who will compete in the heptathlon this year. Her specialties are the jumping events. She went 35 feet, 2 inches in the triple jump, one of the better marks in the state this year and took the women's high jump at 5-0. Holly Lohse, who played softball at Butte College, transferred to Shasta to become a thrower on the team. She won the discus (112-6) and took third in the shot put (34-10). Junta also believes the 1,600 women's relay team has a chance at a school record this season. The men's team is heavy on throwers with sophomores Adam Doelker, Seth Stroing and Keaton Welch, once he gets through basketball season. Freshman Eric Wright won the men's shot put at 42-5 at the rotational. Other names to watch for Shasta include, Andrew Milne (won the 1,500 and 3,000), Nick Evans and Alex Rankin. Evans was second to Butte's Corey Arnold (52.44) in the 400 in 54.99. Rankin, a state qualifier in the men's triple jump last year, took second to Siskiyous' Myron Johnson (45-10½) with a leap of 44-3½. Knights Announce '08 Schedule
FIRST YEAR COACH AARON JUNTA
Shasta College just released its 2008 Track and Field Schedule. Shasta Track and Field will start the season on February 15th with one of two home meets. Shasta will host Siskiyous, Butte, San Jacquin Delta, and Sierra College. In its second home meet Shasta will host its inaugural Shasta Invitational on April 19th. The knights will finish the season on May 19th at the
California State Championships at Cerritos. To view the complete schedule go to the following link. 2008 TRACK SCHEDULE
Last year, Shasta College sent 7 athletes to the state meet. The goals of this year according to head Coach Aaron Junta are to win our conference and send as many athletes as possible to the state meet. Some top athletes who should
lead the Knights are:
Ashley Briton who was a former northern section champion in the
High jump and Triple jump.
Amanda Evers who was 6th at last years state championship in the shot put. Should have a chance to qualify for state in 3 throwing events this year.
Alex Rankin who was a state junior college qualifier as a freshman
in the triple jump (45 feet).
Abdow Haji who was a high school state qualifier in the 1,600M.
Nolan Telles: former Northern section champion in the triple jump.
Brice Peters: former section champion in the 800M.
Coach Junta Knows Talent
NEW KNIGHT CROSS COUNTRY/TRACK COACH
(Shasta College-Jeffrey Jen-5/31/07) On Friday, the Northern Section prep track and field championships at West Valley High School showcased some of the top student-athletes around. A few are headed to bigger things. Of the Eagles top troika, discus thrower Jake Fuller is headed to UC Davis, hurdler Alyssa Christensen is eyeing Brigham Young and Josh McOmber has a football scholarship to Eastern Washington, but is also looking at track as well. Fall River long-distance runner Brent Handa is headed to Cal State Fullerton. Hopefully, they will continue to make noise with their track successes like predecessors such as Wisconsin distance runner Tim Nelson and Sacramento State shot putter David Nichols. Those two are headed for another appearance at the NCAA Division I Championships at Sacramento State on June 6-9. Yet, there were at least one person out at West Valley on Friday who wasn't so much interested in the top athletes, but that next tier who may have some collegiate potential. Aaron Junta, the soon-to-be Shasta College track and field coach once all the red-tape goes through, was there Friday taking in all the action. Clad in a green T-shirt (right color, but still a few shades too light of Knight green), Junta got his first look at area athletes with an eye toward next season. Outgoing coach Pete Giachetti was also there and the two could be seen talking about this student-athlete and that one. After talking with Junta a few weeks back, he said he knew what he was getting into as being the full-time track and field coach at Shasta College. After meeting him in person, Junta looks more and more like a smart choice to run the Knights program. He is realistic that there isn't a huge pool of athletes to draw from and doesn't have wild, dramatic expectations about Shasta College being the absolute powerhouse of JC track in the state. He wouldn't mind an athlete or three competing at West Valley on Friday that turns into the next Daniel Imlach or Matt Jarvis. Imlach, a pole vaulter, won a state JC title in 2005 and moved on to Sacramento State. Now he's the Big Sky champion in the event and tied for sixth this past weekend at the NCAA West Regional. Jarvis won the men's state JC shot put title this year and is now considering his four-year university options. As they have shown, you don't have a top prep standout to eventually make it on the college scene. Sometimes, it just takes a little time.
