Rachel Rides to Arkansas
TEAM MVP FOR 2002
(4/25/03-Shasta College)
Head Coach Kelley Brazil had some great news about team MVP and ALL GVC, Rachel Vrismo. She has been offered a full ride scholarship to
Henderson State in Arkansas. Henderson State is also the school where ex-Knight star Erin McClung transferred. Henderson State Head Coach Rhonda Thigpen had this to say about Rachel, "I am very excited to get Rachel. When I spoke with Coach Brazil about her, she was eager to let me know what a wonderful person and player she is. Well, Coach Brazil was right. I have been impressed with Rachel as a person. She is a serious student and works hard in her classes. I am pleased with her blocking potential as she puts up quite a wall at 6'2". She reads (the ball) well and has a lot of potential for development in regards to her front row hitting ability. Being her size and a lefty on the right side gives her quite an edge. I think she can help us immediately. I know that she has a solid family background and will fit into this style of program nicely. I see her making an impression on and off the court while here at Henderson State University. Rachel has worked to be an overall student-athlete and I am happy that she chose HSU for her future play and academics. I thank Coach Brazil for her honesty about Rachel. I have recruited from this area before and was pleased with the talent and players that came on to continue at Henderson State."
Knights Out In Three
SWEPT BY FRESNO
(11/30/02-Fresno City College) The Lady Knights were unable to muster enough offense to stay in a match with Fresno City College. Shasta was swept in three games to be eliminated from the state play-offs. The Lady Knights played poorly in the first two games but got going in the third game until an injury to outside hitter, Bubbles Lee took the wind out of the Knight's sails. More to follow.
Bubbles, Seph & A Little "Mo"

KNIGHTS DOMINATE 4th & 5th GAMES
(11/26/02-Shasta College-Article by Jason Wilson-Redding Record Searchlight Staff) One game away from elimination, the Shasta College volleyball team finally showed up. All the Lady Knights needed was some help from MVP Sephora Scoubes, ALL-GVC Bubbles Lee and a little "MO," as in momentum.
Sophomore Sephora Scoubes had 20 kills and five blocks as the Knights defeated Taft College in five games — 30-26, 25-30, 21-30, 30-19, 15-6. Sixth-seeded Shasta (14-7) earns a berth to the second round of the NorCal junior college playoffs for the third time in five years and travels to Fresno City College for a 7 p.m. match Saturday. The No. 3 Rams (23-1) swept Yuba College in three games Tuesday night. Late in the match, Shasta bore little resemblance to the team on the floor during the first three error-riddled games. The Knights' defense came together in the final two games, and their heavy hitters finally made their presence known to salvage the match. "I don't know if I can explain it," said Scoubes, who had a hand in eight of Shasta's points in the final game. "We did what we had to. We knew it was now or never." Freshman Bubbles Lee finished with 18 kills, providing pivotal points in the fourth game. Sophomore Rachel Vrismo added 14 kills. Freshman Carrie Eubanks had 53 assists, and freshman Zeva Knuckles had 18 digs. Taft All-American sophomore Katie Swart had a game-high 22 kills, and freshman Shannon Milicic added 21 kills. The "momentum" swung back-and-forth in the first game, with shaky play preventing either team from making any significant run. Shasta won the first game on a Taft double hit, a fitting end to a sloppy display. The second game was a similar see-saw battle. Taft took an early four-point lead and built it to eight points, 19-11. Shasta was able to chip into the lead, but the Knights never got closer than four points down the stretch in a 30-25 defeat. Leading 24-20, Taft took control of the third game with a five-point run for a 29-21 lead. Eubanks committed a double-hit to punctuate the error-plagued match for a 30-21 Taft win. The Cougars had all the "momentum" heading into the fourth game, but it proved meaningless as the Knights shrugged off their sloppy play and turned in an efficient 30-19 victory. Shasta continued its strong play and "momentum" in the highly charged fifth game. Taft kept it close for the first part of the game. But leading 7-5, the Knights put the game out of reach during Stacy Anderson's service, scoring six points for a 13-5 lead. Taft scored one more point, but Scoubes got the ball back with a crushing hit, then served the final point.

Knights Host 1st Round!
TAFT HERE TUESDAY
(11/25/02-Shasta College) The Shasta College volleyball team earned a No. 6 seed in the NorCal playoff brackets released Sunday.
The Knights (13-7), who won the Golden Valley Conference title with an 8-2 record, host Taft (13-8) in a first-round playoff game at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The playoff game conflicts with the Shasta women's basketball home opener. The Knights were originally hosting American River at 5 p.m. Tuesday. The game is now at 3:30 p.m. In other volleyball news, Shasta middle hitter Sephora Scoubes has been named to all-NorCal team. Knights coach Kelly Brazil has also been named the GVC Coach of the Year.
Scoubes - GVC MVP!
SOFTBALL & VOLLEYBALL GVC MVP's!!
(11/19/02-Shasta College) The Knight's Sephora Scoubes was named the Golden Valley Conference volleyball MVP by a vote of the coaches.
Scoubes, a sophomore middle hitter, led the Knights to the GVC title with an 8-2 conference record. "Sep" was also named the league MVP this past year for softball. Also making the all-GVC team were sophomore right-side hitter Rachel Vrismo, freshman setter Carrie Eubanks and freshman outside hitter Bubbles Lee. Freshman outside hitter Stacey Anderson was named as GVC honorable mention.

Knights Continue Sweeping
LASSEN IN THREE STRAIGHT THIS TIME
(11/9/02-Shasta College) Coming off a big victory over Butte, the Shasta College volleyball team still had enough in the tank for Lassen. The Knights won their fifth straight match, taking down Lassen 30-24, 30-16, 30-27 at Shasta gymnasium on Saturday.
Shasta, who forged a first-place tie with Butte in Golden Valley Conference play by beating the Roadrunners on Friday, made sure it kept its front-running status against the Cougars. Lassen (4-4 GVC) didn't go down easily, but Shasta (7-1 GVC, 10-6) still had too much offense for the Cougars. "We just had to be mentally tough today," said sophomore Rachel Vrismo, a right-side hitter. "We were really pumped against Butte, but came out a bit exhausted against Lassen. "They put up a big fight. We had to work for it, but we managed to keep our focus and get the win." Vrismo had a team-high 16 kills while sophomore middle blocker Sephora Scoubes and freshman outside hitter Stacey Anderson each had 13 kills and eight digs. Freshman setter Carrie Eubanks dished out 42 assists and Bubbles Lee, another freshman outside hitter, added six service aces. Vrismo had seven kills and Scoubes added six in the first game to keep Shasta in front of Lassen early. The Cougars were down only 12-11 when Scoubes had three kills and a block to give the Knights some breathing room at 16-11. Lassen closed the gap to three points several times, but Shasta always had an answer each time the Cougars got close. The second game was similar to the first in the early going. Lassen trailed just 15-12 before the Knights started to roll, winning nine of the next 11 points to take firm command of the game. Lee eventually served three straight aces as Shasta won 30-16. Lee had two more service aces early in the third game as Shasta scored 10 straight points for a 10-3 lead. But Lassen clawed to within 16-13 and started to match Shasta point per point. But by then, that was all the Knights needed. "Overall, I'm real pleased," Shasta coach Kelly Brazil said. "We had a very strong offensive attack. We're very aggressive and we hit the ball hard. In the past, we've been more finesse, but not this year." Other areas Brazil was a bit more critical of. "We didn't serve well today and we've struggled with that all year. We have some tough servers, but they haven't always been consistent." Shasta has three more matches left to work on things before the playoffs, starting with its last home match of the season against non-conference foe Yuba at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Then the Knights travel for their last two GVC matches at College of the Siskiyous and Feather River.
Knights Sweep Butte
JUMP INTO FIRST PLACE
(11/9/02-Shasta College) Nothing like a little payback. Payback is exactly what the Knights did to Butte College in a three game sweep of the Roadrunners. The Knights came out strong in a 30-14, 31-29 & 30-25 sweep. With the win, the Knights have jumped into a first place tie with Butte. Shasta owns the #1 GVC seed by way of the tie breaker. Sephora Scoubes had a strong overall game with 12 kills, 12 digs, 5 blocks and 4 service aces. Freshman outside hitter, Stacie Anderson, had a team high 19 kills and chipped in with 8 digs. Rachel Vrismo added 18 kills and 4 blocks while Bubbles Lee had 9 kills.
COR No Match
THREE STRAIGHT
(11/01/02-Eureka) The Knights beat the host Corsairs 30-19, 30-25, 30-24.
Sephora Scoubes led Shasta with 21 kills, three aces and five blocks. Sophomore Rachel Vrismo had 14 kills and two service aces. Outside hitter Stacey Anderson contributed 12 kills for Shasta (6-1 in Golden Valley Conference, 10-6). The win sets up a big showdown with Butte College in the Knight's gym this Friday, 11/8, with the first serve @ 7:00 PM. If the Knights win they earn a share of the GVC title, if they lose its second place.
Knights Rip Feather River
BUBBLES LEE WITH 7 ACES
(10/25/02-Shasta College) Carrie Eubanks set up a 30-13, 30-11, 30-12 victory over Feather River College with 24 assists. Bubbles Lee's led the way with nine kills and seven aces.
Stacey Anderson and Sephora Scoubes each had nine kills and Rachel Vrismo added seven kills and four aces for the Knights (4-1 Golden Valley Conference, 8-6).
Knights Sweep Lassen
CARIE EUBANKS WITH 32 ASSISTS
(10/19/02-Susanville) The Knights put it all together and swept Lassen College, winning in three straight games, 30-21, 30-19 & 30-14. Sephora Scoubes had a team high 12 kills including 9 in the third game. Rachel Vrismo had nine kills, six blocks and three service aces. Traci Reeves added seven blocks and eleven digs. Carrie Eubanks had 32 assists while defensive specialist, Chrissy Joseph, led the 3-1 GVC and 7-6 overall Knights with 12 digs.
Knight's Block Siskiyous
DEFENSE LEADS THE WAY IN SWEEP

(10/16/02-Shasta College-Aritcle by Jeffery Jen, Redding Record Searchlight)
At the start of the season, defense and blocking looked to be the hallmarks of this year's Shasta College volleyball team.
Judging from the way the ball was being pounded into the College of the Siskiyous defense, the Knights' offense looks awfully good too. That the Siskiyous volleyball team was still able to dig up some of Shasta's hard-hitting attacks was a testament to the Eagles' defensive play. But too many Shasta attacks either thumped into the hardwood or couldn't be handled as the Knights rolled to a 30-10, 30-21, 30-17 home victory over the Eagles on Wednesday night. Shasta improved to 2-0 in Golden Valley Conference play and 6-5 overall. Siskiyous dropped to 1-1 in the GVC. The Knights had too many offensive weapons for Siskiyous. And Shasta freshman setter Carrie Eubanks made sure all those weapons were used. "There are a lot of options, and it's easier to mix things up," Eubanks said. "It's really cool, but it is hard to decide where to pass the ball. They're all good choices to pass to." Usually the top choice is sophomore middle blocker Sephora Scoubes, who finished with a team-high 15 kills and threw in five blocks and four service aces. Scoubes was particularly dominant in the first game, getting seven kills and two blocks to propel Shasta's fast start. Siskiyous got a quick lesson about the Knights offense. One moment, the Eagles were tied 6-6 in game one. The next, Shasta had sprinted out to a 20-7 lead. Traci Reeves, another sophomore middle blocker, had 11 service points in the game. The Knights also have right-side hitter Rachel Vrismo (eight kills) and Reeves (five kills) on the front line. Siskiyous also has a pair of good middle-hitters in sophomores Tiffany Wood and Mary Curran. But they were mostly stymied by the combination of 6-foot-2 Vrismo, 5-foot-11 Reeves, and 5-foot-10 Scoubes and their blocking prowess. The Knights also have a pair of improving outside hitters in freshmen Valena "Bubbles" Lee (11 kills) and Stacey Anderson (six kills). "Both of them have really come on strong," Knights coach Kelly Brazil said. "They've improved on their vertical leap since the start of the year, and that has helped them a lot." Siskiyous played better in the second game, but never seriously threatened after an early Shasta lead. The Knights led by as much as 26-15 before the Eagles made a late surge to close the gap. The Knights then rolled through game three, jumping to a 9-4 lead and gradually pulling away for the match win. For the Eagles, they must rebound on the road with games at Lassen on Friday and Butte on Saturday. "Shasta is very strong team," Eagles coach Dawn Soutsavang said. "We played OK, but we need to focus on the way we play and not on who is on the other side of the net." For Shasta, a big game at Butte looms Friday. The Knights have lofty goals for the rest of season, and the game against the Roadrunners should indicate if they can reach those goals. "I think we can go 10-0 in league," Lee said after the Siskiyous win. "Everyone on our team is contributing and things are going well. We want to win Northern California,
and I think we can do it."

Not Ready For Santa Rosa
LAST TWO GAMES CLOSE ONES
(10/12/02-Shasta College) The Lady Knights (GVC 1-0, overall 5-5) could not muster enough offense and defense in losing 3 straight games to Santa Rosa Junior College, 30-21, 30-29 & 30-28. Bubbles Lee led the Knights with 13 kills. Rachel Vrismo and Stacey Anderson each added 8 kills. Carrie Eubanks led the Knights in assists with 31.
Knights Rout Redwoods
START OUT LEAGUE WITH A WIN
(10/11/02-Shasta College)
The Lady Knights volleyball team cruised to a 3 game sweep of visiting College of the Redwoods to start league play. The Knights played better each game winning, 30-18, 30-13 & 30-8. Bubbles Lee led a balanced attack with 11 kills. Traci Reeves and Stacey Anderson had 9 kills each while Rachel Vrismo added 8 kills and 7 blocks. Stacey Anderson and Chrissy Joseph also had 11 digs each while Zeva Knuckles added 10 digs. Carrie Eubanks dished out 29 assists and had 4 service aces for the Knights
(GVC 1-0, overall 5-4).

What is a libero?
NEW VOLLEYBALL POSITION
(10/3/02-Redding Record Searchlight, Jeffrey Jen)
When I first heard that word, I thought it described the type of work Zorro might do.
But no, the libero is actually a brand-new position developed for volleyball. Essentially, the libero's role is as a defensive specialist. This is the first season that colleges, including junior colleges, are using the libero-style rules, which are as follows: • The libero can only play in the back row. • She can't jump when making an attack. • She can't set the ball in front of the 10-foot line. • She can't serve. • Having the libero enter or leave the game doesn't count as an official substitution against the team. • A team's designated libero can be changed during a match, but never in a game. Volleyball teams play a match which is best-of-five games. Shasta volleyball coach Kelly Brazil says the rules take getting used to. The Knights have a strong defensive team as it is, so the libero position hasn't had too much of an impact on them. Still, Brazil uses the new position available because of the free substitutions. So far this season, the Knights libero has been Chrissy Joseph, a sophomore from Carson City, Nev., who also plays softball for Shasta. Asked about how she takes to her new role, Joseph said, "I kind of enjoy it. I can play a lot more than just as regular specialist. I also can focus a more on my passing." Brazil notes that Shasta, which hosts its annual alumni game at 7 p.m. Friday, has plenty of strong defensive players, so someone else could wind up in the libero role in the future. Either way, the libero should be easy to spot. One last rule is that the libero has to wear a different-colored jersey than her teammates.

Knights Close in Sacramento
LOSE TO DE ANZA & SAC CITY
(9/7/02-Sacramento) The Knights found out that if they are going to have a successful season they had better step-up their game. On Friday the Knights traveled to Sacramento and dropped two matches, one to De Anza and one to Sac City. Since it is so early in the season the Knights have plenty of time to get rolling. They should also see both these teams again for a rematch. Rachel Vrismo had 16 kills and Sephora Scoubes added 12 kills in the lose to De Anza, 15-30, 30-17, 30-21, 28-30 and 15-13. The match against Sac City wasn't as close. The Knights (0-2) were on the short end of 30-16, 30-28 & 30-27 scores.
