Brazil Believes in New Knights
Crop of hitters have Shasta College volleyball
squad eyeing postseason

(9/9/04-By Jeffrey Jen, Record Searchlight
September 9, 2004)
Kelly Brazil knows when she's got a talented group. Brazil has five key players back from last year's Shasta College team that went 15-5 and earned a No. 5 seed in the NorCal playoffs. "I believe this is a really good group," said Shasta coach Brazil, whose team lost to rival Butte College in the second round last season. "We have a shot to be one of the better teams in Northern California." Shasta went 1-1 in a tournament in Sacramento over the weekend and hosts its first home game at 7 p.m. tonight against Southwestern Oregon Community College. With the returning talent, the Knights should be a very strong hitting and blocking team. All five of the returning sophomores are at least 5-foot-9, the tallest being 6-1right-side hitter Katie Wilson, the lone bench player coming back. All the others started last season. "We all are real good hitters and we all play different positions," said sophomore outside hitter Marissa Kraft. "We have high expectations this year. We want to win league and get to the state playoffs." Kraft and Carly Bagshaw, a 5-foot-10 middle blocker, are the team's co-captains. Kraft is a solid all-around player who can hit, defend and deliver a jump serve. Bagshaw, at 5-10, is a hard hitter and a strong blocker. Also back is middle blocker Maggie Roberts, right-side hitters Krystal Bourne and Katie Wilson, the team's tallest player at 6-1. Both Roberts and Wilson were starters last year along with Kraft and Bagshaw. Given the strong hitting of the quintet, Brazil has gone to a 6-2 playing rotation, which features two setters coming in for certain hitters in an eight-player rotation, for just the second time in her nine-year run at Shasta. Two freshmen setters from Foothill High School, Jessica Sylvester and Theresa Vrismo, step into the void created by Bailey Scott's departure, who received a partial scholarship to play at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Also gone from last year's team is Golden Valley Conference MVP Bubbles Lee and defensive specialist Zeva Knuckles. Of the other newcomers, Brazil says that Michelle Laurent of Yreka has stood out the most. Jaymie Wilson, Bethany McGee and Jeni Barentine all can play middle or outside, providing depth to both spots.Kate Free, a freshman from Napa, Idaho, has worked herself into the libero position. Other players Brazil can turn to include Tara Loucks, a freshman from Red Bluff, Claudio Jimenez and redshirt freshman Amanda Ayala.
