Zachary was ahead at the time of the default. Two other Shasta wrestlers placed. Matt Coonfield, a sophomore, won his third-place match by easily defeating Santa Rosa's Casey Sillivan 10-1. Tanner Lovett, a freshman, took fifth in the heavyweight class by topping Cerritos' George Palmer. Lovett also won by default. Zachary and Coonfield were named junior college All-americans.

ZACHARY, COONFIELD, LOVETT & VAN RYN ALL-BVC

Nice job Knight!s (The following is from Jeffrey Jen's Redding Record Searchlight article on 12/4/03 - Micah Zachary was named the Bay Valley Conference wrestler of the year, yet Zachary was only second-team all-conference because he wrestled a league match at 149 pounds and then moved up to 157, where he earned conference honors. Two Knights were named first-team all-conference: Matt Coonfield at 174 pounds and Tanner Lovett in the heavyweight class. Zachary and Robbie Van Ryn (197 pounds) earned second-team honors. The Knights are headed to the Northern California regional tournament in Modesto on Saturday. Due to the financial burden many schools are under this season, only the top four in each weight class qualify for the state meet, held Dec. 13 in Saratoga. Last season, the top eight advanced.)

Pair of Aces
COONFIELD & ZACHARY ARE DOMINANT
(10/8/03-Shasta College-Jeffery Jen Record Searchlight) The Shasta College wrestling team isn't as strong as a year ago. But two Knights wrestlers are individually on their way to what could be a special season. The Knights hosted their first home meet of the season on Wednesday and fell to Sierra College 33-16 at the Shasta College gymnasium. There were some positives, one being sophomore Matt Coonfield, a holdover from last year's Knights squad that finished fifth in the state. Coonfield also finished fifth at the state championships in the 197-pound weight class. But he has been wrestling down a few classes this season. Against Sierra, he was in the 174-pound match and pinned Brandon Thompson with 9.8 seconds left in the second period, giving Shasta six points. "Actually, I'm glad I was able to pin him right then and there," Coonfield said about his win. "I'm a little sick now, so I wasn't sure if I could have gone the entire match. Coonfield controlled the match, leading 9-2 at the time of the pin. His victory pushed his season record to 8-0. The other big performer was freshman Micah Zachary out of Anderson High School. Zachary easily defeated Eric Diggs 17-6 at 157 pounds. Zachary has only one loss this season. Zachary got behind 2-0 on an early takedown, but had his way with Diggs after that. A reversal and a pair of takedowns put him back on top, and later Zachary had a pair of three-point near falls to earn a superior decision for four team points. The only other points Shasta earned were on a forfeit victory for Tanner Lovett in the heavyweights. Knights coach Max Burch knows his team is still learning. He also is aware his top pair could go quite a ways this season. Both are aiming for an individual state title, something that not even last year's team had. "Micah has the best explosion and power of all the wrestlers I've coached," Burch said. "He definitely can be at the next level. Matt has been mostly a defensive wrestler in his career who has real good counter moves. I'm trying to get him to be more offensive out there on the mat." Shasta's next dual meet is at 7 p.m. Wednesday at home against Santa Rosa.
