Course Organization:
This Intermediate Algebra course has been implemented for those students,
who for reasons of work, family responsibilities,
access difficulties, or residence location, find it impossible to take this
class physically on campus. It has been designed and optimized for online delivery,
and while lecture material, homework assignments and tests are entirely via the Internet,
a weekly optional "Discussion Session" with the instructor is offered to reinforce
fundamental concepts, correctness of mathematical procedures and solving techniques.
Due to limited number of seats in the computer classroom (1307), only 28
students can be enrolled in the hybrid version of this course.
The 60 minutes "Discussion Sessions" are scheduled for
every Friday of the semester from 11:00am to 12:00pm. The student's
active participation during these sessions will grant extra credit points to be
considered in the final grade calculation for the
course.
The average student
is expected to devote a minimum of 9 hours per week to complete this course succesfully.
These include about three hours per week studying the material delivered in the online lectures
(equivalent to classroom lectures) and about six hours per week of practice exercises
and homework.
The student attendance is defined as regular weekly on-line work within
the WebCT course environment. It is very important for the student to maintain
a constant pace on learning the concepts and exercising the acquired
knowledge. The lessons, assignments and evaluations have been designed and
scheduled to enforce a gradual, consistent progress. A student who has not
interacted in the course by the fifth day of class will be dropped for
non-attendance. A student who has not interacted in the course for more than
seven days runs the risk of failing the class for non-attendance.
Explicit directions on what material should be covered, and the homework to
be submitted is given regularly twice per week: every Monday and Thursday.
This information is presented in the "Homepage" of the course, which is the
first page accessed when the student logs in his/her WebCT course account.
The directions include: A Message Box where the important messages and news
for the course are given, followed by the detailed Instructions
on what work is expected
from the student for the next few days. Since
the Homepage is updated twice per week (Mondays and Thursdays), the student must
connect regularly to the course so as not to miss any instruction. The overall
schedule of Lessons, homework and test release will be available to the student
through a link from the homepage entitled: "Calendar".
The course must be completed within the duration of a semester. The
lecture material is delivered in seven main "Modules", subdivided
in Units.
The lecture material is available
through links to the different content Units as the semester progresses.
The on-line lectures contain all the course topics the student needs to
learn and include interactive step by step problem solving to help with the
understanding of
the different mathematical techniques. It is strongly suggested that the student
prints the on-line Lessons to have a printed copy of the covered materials
for future reference.
There are "Extended examples" within each Lesson, which interactively guide the student
through the techniques of problem solving. These are intended to prepare the student
for the homework
assignments to be completed and submitted on-line, and which are graded.
